THE SHORT STORY
After falling behind early, Lipscomb Baseball battled back to defeat North Alabama 11-7 in 11 innings Thursday evening in Florence, Ala.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Caleb Ketchup led things off for the Bisons, giving Lipscomb an early base runner with a single to left field. He was pushed to scoring position on a
Maddux Houghton sacrifice bunt and scored when
Mason Lundgrin beat out an infield single which forced an errant throw for a 1-0 lead. Lundgrin found himself 90-feet from home plate after a ground ball, but he was stranded.
North Alabama answered in the bottom of the first in a big way with a pair of two-run home runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions scored two more unearned runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 6-1 lead.
The Lipscomb defense dug in behind
Collin Witzke for the third and fourth innings, keeping the Lions off the board with Witzke notching three punch outs during the two innings.
Lipscomb mounted a threat in the top of the fifth with back-to-back hits from
David Coppedge and
Tiger Borom to lead off the inning. The Bisons got a pair in scoring position with two outs, but a called strike three on a full count ended the inning and kept Lipscomb from cutting into the North Alabama lead.
The Bisons got the leadoff man aboard again in the top of the sixth when
Malik Williams worked a walk, but three quick outs stranded the fifth Bison on base for the evening.
After a quick out in the top of the seventh, Lipscomb put the pressure on the Lions. Borom worked a one-out walk and Ketchup knocked his second single of the night for a pair of base runners. The pair advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch and were threatened to be stranded, but Lundgrin turned on a 3-1 delivery and squared a home run over the right center-field fence. His first home run as a Bison scored three runs and inched Lipscomb closer, cutting the North Alabama lead 6-5.
The Lions responded scoring a run on a sacrifice fly in the home half of the seventh for a 7-5 lead heading into the final two innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Lipscomb rallied to tie things up in the top of the ninth. Ketchup led off with his third hit of the night, a double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lundgrin got the job done with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ketchup and put Lipscomb back in a run. Williams stepped to the plate with two outs and needing a run and swung on the first pitch he saw and sent his sixth homer of the season out of the park to tie things 7-7.
Matthew Bohnert headed back out to the mound for his second inning of work in the bottom of the ninth needing three outs to send the game to extra innings. Bohnert was up to the challenge, working around a leadoff walk to send the Bisons to its first extra-inning game of the season.
After being retired in order in the top of the 10
th, the Lipscomb defense had to rise to the challenge to send the game to the 11
th inning. Bohnert and
Trey Nordmann forced three ground balls and the Bisons' defense was picture perfect to get the three outs needed to stay alive.
Lipscomb quickly surged to the lead in the top of the 11
th inning. A walk, hit batsman and a Houghton bunt single loaded the bases with no outs for the Bisons. Lundgrin made the Lions pay when he notched RBI number five of the night with a bases-loaded walk to give Lipscomb an 8-7 lead. With the bases still juiced, Williams sent a ball up the middle to plate both runners in scoring position and the Bisons had a 10-7 lead with the bases still loaded and no outs to force a UNA pitching change. The Bisons scored one more run when
Brian Hama laid down a bunt single for an 11-7 lead.
Nordmann returned to the mound and retired the Lions in order to complete the comeback and take game one of the series.
