THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball came out on top 10-7 after a 10-inning battle at North Alabama Saturday afternoon to sweep the Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the first time in the series, Lipscomb was held off the board in the top of the first, but Ike Buxton had a good start on the mound in his ninth appearance of the season. He responded by retiring North Alabama in order with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the first.

Lipscomb's offense got going in the top of the second with a leadoff single from Malik Williams. The score quickly turned in the Bisons' favor when Trace Willhoite turned on the first pitch he saw on the day and blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second.

Buxton and the Lipscomb defense continued solid work, retiring the Lions in order for three-straight innings. Caleb Ketchup was impressive at shortstop, making six-consecutive assists to first base through the second and third innings.

North Alabama had its first offensive threat of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth with two leadoff singles that just got through the middle. Both runners would eventually score to tie the game 2-2 after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, UNA threatened to take the lead when it had a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs, but Buxton dug in and got a strikeout and pair of shallow fly balls to keep the Lions off the board. Once again UNA got a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Buxton was up to the challenge yet again and got the three outs needed to keep the game tied.

The Bisons threatened in the top of the seventh when it loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout on a full count ended the inning stranding the bases loaded.

North Alabama took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when a two-out single gave them a base runner. The runner was awarded second base on a balk call and scored on an RBI single for a 3-2 lead. Another bloop single to right field scored the second run of the inning to give UNA a 4-2 lead.

Ketchup got Lipscomb going in the top of the eighth with a leadoff base hit to left field. The Bisons found themselves with the tying run on base when Maddux Houghton put a beautiful bunt down the first base line for a base knock. With no outs, Mason Lundgrin worked a walk to load the bases and Williams took advantage with a single up the middle that scored the tying runs. With two on and one out, Ethan Stamps stepped into the batters' box and turned on a 3-1 pitch, sending a three-run long ball over the left field fence putting the Bisons ahead 7-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, North Alabama cut into the Lipscomb lead when a leadoff walk scored on a sacrifice fly for a 7-5 game. Trey Nordmann came out of the bullpen after the first out and got a pair of strikeouts end the inning with little damage.

North Alabama scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth too rally and force extra innings for the second time of the series as the game was tied 7-7.

Lipscomb responded well to the challenge and quickly retook the lead. After a leadoff single to center field from Lundgrin, Williams hammered a ball past the right-center field fence to give the Bisons a 9-7 lead with one swing of the bat. The Bisons, however, weren't done and worked a pair of walks for two more base runners with two outs. Tiger Borom took advantage and laced and RBI single through the left side for a 10-7 lead.

Hayden Frank took over on the mound for the bottom of the 10th and retired the Lions in order to close out the 10-7 extra-inning victory.
