THE SHORT STORY
Steady offense and strong defense combined for a 13-3 victory for Lipscomb Baseball Saturday afternoon at Bellarmine to take the road series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of hits.
Maddux Houghton started things with a one-out bunt single and scored when
Mason Lundgrin doubled to center field. Lundgrin would later score on a ground ball for the 2-0 lead.
Bellarmine got a run back in the bottom of the frame, giving Lipscomb a 2-1 lead after the first.
Trace Willhoite put another run on the board for Lipscomb with a leadoff home run in the top of the second to push Lipscomb's lead back out to a pair, but Bellarmine responded with a two-run home run to tie things up 3-3.
After a scoreless third inning, the Bisons began to pull away. In the top of the fourth,
Rudy Maxwell singled and Willhoite walked to give Lipscomb two on with two outs.
Cam McMillan stepped up to the plate and notched his first hit as a Bison. He hammered a ball past the center field fence for a three-run homer, giving Lipscomb a 6-3 lead.
Houghton added a run for Lipscomb in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo home run. Lipscomb got back on the board in the top of the seventh when Maxwell delivered an RBI single for an 8-3 lead.
The Bisons biggest inning came in the top of the eighth when it scored five runs. Houghton scored a pair with an RBI double and Maxwell send a two-run long ball over the left field fence for a 13-3 lead.
Lipscomb's pitching staff closed things out in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the 13-3 win and series victory.
HERD NOTES
- Houghton and Maxwell both had a three-hit game.
- Williams also notched a multi-hit game with two on the afternoon.
- Lipscomb's pitching staff punched out seven batters.
- The Bisons out-hit the Knights 11-6 with six of those hits being for extra bases.
- Collin Witzke picked up the win, improving to 2-1 on the season.
- Lipscomb hit a season-high four home runs.
