Softball sets up rubber match with Saturday split against division leader Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. – Lipscomb softball won the backend of its Saturday doubleheader at Central Arkansas as the Bisons fell 7-1 in game one before coming from behind to win 2-1 in eight innings in game two at Farris Field.

The split moves the Bisons to 17-27 overall and 7-10 in ASUN play, while the Sugar Bears go to 27-16 and 11-6 and remain on top of the ASUN west division standings.

GAME ONE
In the first game, the Bisons fell behind early and struggled to find any success at the plate.

The Sugar Bears (27-15, 11-5 ASUN) jumped on Lipscomb early with three runs in the first inning and four more in the second. It stayed that way until the top of the sixth when the Bisons were finally able to push across a run.

Amy Vetula led off with an infield single and then stole second. After advancing to third on a ground ball out, Maci Cunconan brought her in with a sacrifice fly to left field. That would be all the runs the purple and gold could muster.

Lipscomb only managed multiple hits in one inning, and recorded five total in the game. Katelyn Belding led the team with a 2-for-3 game.

Laine Barefoot (4-8) suffered the defeat after allowing seven runs on nine hits in just 2.1 innings. Emily Yakubowski came on in relief and tossed the rest of the game, giving up just three hits and striking out five across 3.2 shutout frames.

Kayl Beaver got the win for UCA, improving to 15-6 on the year. She allowed just one run on five hits.

GAME TWO
In game two, Central Arkansas struck again in the first frame with a lone run.

In the top of the second, the Bisons got going at the dish. Kyndall Crawford started it off with a single through the right side. Katelyn Belding then followed with a single to center before a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Two batters later, Presley Leebrick lined a ball back into center field, driving in Crawford to make it a 1-1 game.

The score stayed that way into the eighth inning when Lipscomb went on the attack. Amy Vetula slapped her seventh double of the season over the UCA third baseman to reach scoring position. Catcher Kamrie Rich then tagged a single into right on her very first pitch to put runners on the corners. Maci Cunconan followed with a deep fly ball to left center for a sacrifice fly, allowing Vetula to plate the game-winning tally.

Kate Peters found herself in a little trouble in the home half after back-to-back singles put the winning run on base with one out, but the freshman rallied to get a ground out and a fly out from the next two batters to seal the Saturday split.

Peters picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season. She tossed a complete game, giving up just the one run on 11 hits. The eight innings were a season high for the right-hander.

Vetula and Rich each led the Bisons with two base knocks in the game, while four others collected one.
