Softball swept by Eastern Kentucky in Saturday doubleheader

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb softball team dropped both ends of its ASUN doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. The Bisons fell 16-7 in game one before dropping a 3-1 decision in extra innings in the nightcap.

Lipscomb fell to 17-30 overall and 7-13 in league play while EKU improved to 12-33 and 8-12. The Colonels are currently one game ahead of the Bisons with only four conference games remaining as both sides are fighting for a spot in the postseason tournament.

GAME ONE
It didn't take long for the action to get going on Saturday as EKU needed just four batters to take a 3-0 lead off the bat of Jasmine Miller.

The Bisons got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame after hits from Amy Vetula and Elise Shewmaker, coupled with a Kamrie Rich walk loaded the bases. Maci Cunconan then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Colonels kept the hit parade rolling in the second, adding four more knocks to their tally. After a leadoff walk and a single, Mattira Morales blasted another 3-run shot for EKU before a pair of RBI-singles extended their advantage to 8-1.

Lipscomb cut into the score with another sacrifice fly in the bottom half, this time from Shewmaker to make it 8-2.

After a three-up, three down top of the third from Laine Barefoot, the Bisons responded with their biggest frame of the day in the bottom. Lipscomb loaded the bases to get the inning started before Kyndall Crawford and Kaitlynn Woodside brought in runs with RBI-groundouts.

Jessie Brown then beat out an infield single to shortstop that allowed a third run to score. Two batters later, Shewmaker drilled a double off the wall in left to drive in two more runs and pull the purple and gold within a run at 8-7. However, that would be all the runs Lipscomb would score.

EKU tacked on four runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Kate Peters (8-8) suffered the loss after being pulled with no outs in the second frame. She allowed six runs on three hits and two walks.

Barefoot pitched 2.2 innings, giving up six runs on six hits and three walks. Makayla Veneziale tossed the final 3.1 frames, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. The trio combined for four strikeouts and 184 pitches.

Shewmaker led the Bisons with a 2-for-3 game at the dish with three RBI, while Vetula (2-for-4) and Brown (2-for-3) also added a pair of knocks.

 GAME TWO
After a series opener that featured 23 hits and 23 runs, game two featured only four hits and zero runs through the first four frames.

Emily Yakubowski got the nod for the Bisons and pitched well, despite falling to 2-7 on the year. The junior didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and only gave up two through seven innings before the Colonels did their damage in the eighth.

With a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth, junior Meghan Kline gave the Bisons a shot in the arm with a leadoff home run to put Lipscomb on top 1-0, her first deep ball of the season.

EKU responded in the top of the sixth with two outs when Lou Bowers hit a solo shot to tie the game.

After both sides went down in order in the seventh, EKU finally got to Yakubowski in the eighth with three straight hits to start the inning. Maggie Pertee singled home a run before Bowers added a sac fly to put the Colonels on top 3-1.

Lipscomb was retired in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Yakubowski tossed a complete game, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks. She struck out seven Colonels on 133 pitches.

Vetula led the team with a 2-for-4 night. Presley Leebrick swiped her fourth stolen base of the season.
