THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball fell 5-1 to No. 1 Tennessee on a rainy Wednesday night in Knoxville to round out a nine-game road swing.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Bisons were retired in order in the top of the first, Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning when a two-out triple set up the Vols to score on a wild pitch.
Lipscomb got its first hit of the night from
Malik Williams with a leadoff single in the top of the second. He stole second to get himself to scoring position, but Williams was stranded. Tennessee doubled its lead in the bottom of the second when a leadoff double came around to score on an RBI single. The Vols threatened to do more damage, but
Jared Shemper came to the mound and caught a guy stealing and got a fly ball and strikeout to get out of the inning with minimal damage.
Tyler Legere took over the mound in relief in the bottom of the third and shut down the Vols with a fly ball and a double play to keep the 2-0 Lipscomb deficit manageable. Legere stayed on the mound for the bottom of the fourth and made quick work of Tennessee. The Vols hit a one-out double, but the Lipscomb defense got the out at third when he tried for an extra base. Legere then got a quick fly ball to center field to retire the Vols in order.
Lipscomb was scoreless again in the top of the fifth frame and the Vols took advantage, adding a run in the home half of the inning. After
Hayden Frank struck out the leadoff batter, Tennessee turned on an 0-2 count and hit a long ball past the left field fence to extend its lead 3-0. Frank and
John Cheatwood combined for the final two outs of the inning to strand a Vol and keep the Bisons in striking distance.
Lipscomb's offense had a good opportunity to score in the top of the sixth when
Caleb Ketchup and
Tiger Borom led off the inning with a pair of knocks. A successful double steal with one out gave the Bisons a couple in scoring position, but the Vols made a pitching change and struck out two-consecutive to keep the Bisons off the board.
The Vols answered with offense of its own in the bottom of the sixth with another solo home run to extend its lead 4-0.
Williams responded with his second hit of the night, a single up the middle to lead off the seventh, but he was caught stealing and the Bisons were ultimately retired in order.
Matthew Bohnert took over on the hill in the bottom of the inning and returned the favor, quickly retiring Tennessee in order.
Lipscomb was finally able to crack the scoreboard in the top of the eighth.
Chaz Bertolani got things going with a leadoff single. Ketcup reached on an error and advanced to second, putting two in scoring position for the Bisons with no outs. Borom made the Vols pay for the error with an RBI ground out, cutting the Tennessee lead 4-1.
The Vols got the run back in the bottom of the inning when a leadoff single eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly to push its lead back out to four runs. The Bisons were unable to score in the ninth and ultimately fell 5-1.
HERD NOTES
- Williams had Lipscomb's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 and worked Lipscomb's only walk.
