THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball fell 10-2 to Liberty in the final game of pool play for the Bisons in the ASUN Championship. The Bisons have advanced out of pool play and will play in the ASUN Semifinals on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After going down in order in the top of the first, Liberty jumped on the Bisons in the bottom of the inning for an early lead.
Logan Van Treeck got the start on the mound for Lipscomb and struggled early with four-consecutive free passes that gave Liberty a 1-0 lead without the advantage of a hit. After another free pass and a pair of hits, the Flames got six runs across for a 6-0 lead after the first inning.
Malik Williams punched back to lead off the top of the second with a high-long home run over the left field fence to quickly get a run back. The Bisons continued to show discipline at the plate and a pair of hits from
Trace Willhoite and
Ethan Stamps and a walk loaded the bases.
Lillo Paxia stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced and was hit by a pitch to drive another run home before a double play ended the inning with Liberty leading 6-2.
Collin Witzke, who came out of the bullpen in the first inning, continued his good work on the mound and stranded a pair with a strikeout to end the second inning.
Neither team was able to score in the third or fourth innings as the pitching settled in on both sides.
After being retired in order for two-consecutive innings,
Lillo Paxia connected on Lipscomb's fourth hit of the night with a one-out single to center field in the top of the fifth, but he was stranded as the game stayed 6-2 in favor of the Flames.
Liberty got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out two-run home run for an 8-2 lead. The Flames added another run on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 9-2 lead after six complete frames. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when a leadoff double eventually scored on a passed ball for a 10-2 lead.
Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth as Liberty was victorious in the final game of pool play for the two teams.
