Volleyball continues to grow, despite 3-0 loss at No. 4 Louisville

 
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lipscomb volleyball (3-5) fell in three sets at No. 4 Louisville Saturday night. The Cardinals (7-1) took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 26-24.

A stingy Cardinal defense held the Bisons to their second-lowest hitting percentage of the season (.134), while Louisville was efficient on offense, swinging .376 with only nine errors.

Freshman Courtney Jones led the team with a career-high 10 kills. She hit .391 after just one miscue on 23 attacks. Jada DiVita added eight kills, but was held to just a .062 mark.

Defensively, junior libero Delaney Smith scooped up 11 digs, while Connelly Renfrow added nine.

Sophia Hudepohl recorded 23 assists, five digs, three blocks and two kills from her setter position.
 
 
 
Set 1 Quick Hits (UL: 25-14)
  • After the set was tied at one, the Cardinals took the lead and never looked back in the opening frame.
  • Louisville blasted Lipscomb offensively, outhitting the Bisons .500 to .067.
  • DiVita recorded four of her eight kills in the set while Caroline Stogner added three.
 
 
Set 2 Quick Hits (UL: 25-17)
  • Set two was a little closer in the early stages after a kill from Stogner put the Bisons in front 2-1, but that was the only lead for the purple and gold.
  • Louisville used an 18-9 run to build an eight-point advantage and never looked back.
  • The Cardinals hit .300 compared to .074 for the Bisons.
  • Six players earned kills for Lipscomb in the set, led by Jones' two.
  • Meg Mersman and Hudepohl each blocked two balls in the frame, helping Lipscomb to four as a squad.
 

Set 3 Quick Hits (UL: 26-24)
  • Set three was the most competitive of the night with five ties and two lead changes.
  • The sides stayed within three points for much of the set before Louisville built a 17-11 lead.
  • Easy for the Bisons to pack it in, they battled back to tie the frame up at 21.
  • Jones caught fire in the stanza, firing eight of her 10 kills on a .444 clip with no errors.
  • The Bisons held set point at 24-23 after a kill from Jones and a big block from Mersman and Hudepohl, but following a timeout from the other side, the Cardinals took the next three points to win the match.
  • Louisville still outhit Lipscomb .333 to .225, but the Bisons produced 16 kills to just 12 for the Cardinals.
  • Hudepohl assisted 12 times and had two digs.
  • Renfrow led the way with five digs.
 
 
UP NEXT
 Lipscomb continues its three-week road swing with a stop in Lawrence, Kansas for the Jayhawk Classic. The Bisons will get a few days off before three straight days of matches in the Midwest. They will battle the host No. 20 Kansas at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

They will then match up with Omaha on Firday and UCF on Saturday, wrapping up nonconference action.
