Women’s Soccer Defeat Lions in 3-1 Road Win

Final Score: Lipscomb 3, North Alabama 1
Location: Florence, Ala. (Bill Jones Athletic Complex
Records: Lipscomb (5-4-1), North Alabama (3-3-5)

FLORENCE, Ala. – Lipscomb women's soccer earned their second conference win of the season Thursday night in a faceoff with North Alabama. After the Lions opened the scoring, the Bisons popped off two goals in the first half and buried one in the final five minutes of the match to cement their victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match got off to a quick start as Charlotte Kellett of North Alabama logged the first goal of the match at the three minute mark with a shot from 30 yards out that landed in the far side of the net. This hiccup did not deter netminder CJ Graham as she went on to log three saves in the remainder of the first half.

Graham's determination to bring the Bisons back into the match from between the pipes helped set the tone for the squad and things picked up quickly for Lipscomb from then on. The Bisons put two shots on the Lions' net in the next three minutes.

Kelli Beiler was the first Bison to find the net in the match with a header inside the box after a free kick from Alivia Carapazza clipped off the left post. Beiler's goal set the momentum rolling for Lipscomb and Carapazza sent Molly Grant down the field to give the Bisons the go-ahead goal 27 minutes into the match. Both teams notched a few more chances, but the score held at 2-1 to Lipscomb going into the half.

The Bisons kept the pressure on the Lions at both ends of the pitch from the first whistle of the second half of the contest. Shelby Craft and Molly Grant had dangerous chances during which they broke through the North Alabama defense to force the Lions' keeper to make big saves.

Tori Wheeler sealed Lipscomb's victory in the final three minutes of the match as she buried a shot in the top left corner of the net to earn her first goal as a Bison.

On the other end of the pitch, the defensive effort from the Bisons throughout the match held the Lions to 10 shots in the contest, just four of which occurred in the first half.

HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"We are really happy with the team's performance tonight. To fall behind so quickly and then show the character that we did to get ourselves back in the match was fantastic.

UNA is a really talented team. They always play so hard and make executing a game plan difficult, but our girls found away and that speaks volumes to the character of this group.

Not to mention, we scored three great goals and that's always promising! So, we're super proud of the result and excited to play Sunday against a talented UCA team."

QUICK FACTS:
  • This victory marks the Bisons' seventh straight victory over the Lions
  • Beiler's goal marks her fifth of the season, making her the conference leader for goals and second for points at 10
  • With her two assists, Carapazza becomes the conference leader for assists at five so far this season
  • Wheeler's goal marks her first of the season, first as a Bison, and the second of her career

UP NEXT:
The Bisons will continue conference play on Sunday, September 25. They will take on Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. at 1 p.m. CT.
