Women’s Soccer Sends Colonels Home Packing

Final Score: Lipscomb 2, Eastern Kentucky 0
Location: Nashville, Tenn. (Lipscomb Soccer Complex)
Records: Lipscomb (7-4-1), Eastern Kentucky (5-4-2)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb Women's Soccer welcomed the Eastern Kentucky Colonels to the Lipscomb Soccer Complex for the first time since they last met on the same pitch in the Semifinals of the 2021 ASUN Women's Soccer Championship. The Lady Bisons blanked the Colonels 2-0 in the match with a goal a piece from Kelli Beiler and Shelby Craft.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bisons got off to a quick start offensively as Kale'a Perry logged a shot on goal just eight seconds into play that was scooped up by the Colonels' keeper. EKU responded with a shot of their own at the 45 second mark that was collected by sophomore netminder CJ Graham.

The two squads continued to trade blows throughout the first half including a rocket of a shot from sophomore Faith Adams that ricocheted off the crossbar. Senior captain Kelli Beiler broke open the scorebook of the match just under 17 minutes into the match with a shot off of a settled pass from Adams to take the Bisons into the lead.

Perry put another shot on goal for the Bisons late into the first half, but the score held through the break. Less than four minutes into the second half, Perry logged the first shot of the half with a laser that beamed off the right post before trickling back into play.

The Colonels responded with three shots of their own before junior Shelby Craft logged her first shot of the match. The Bisons traded shots with the Colonels before Craft broke through the Eastern Kentucky defense to slide through a pass from Emanuela Schurch for Lipscomb's second goal of the match at the 70-minute mark.

Eastern Kentucky pushed to respond with a strong shot to the top center of the net that Graham decisively punched away to maintain the score. Junior Tori Wheeler and Perry kept up the offensive pressure from the Bisons and recorded a shot on goal each as the Bisons sealed their fourth conference victory.

QUICK FACTS:
  • This is the second game in a row with a goal for Craft and her fourth of the season – tying her for third in the conference in goals.
  • Beiler logged her sixth goal of the season, ranking her first in the conference and putting her in the top-100 goal scorers in NCAA Division I Women's Soccer
  • Beiler also moved in to lead the conference in points with 12 total points
  • The Bisons are now 4-0 in conference play
  • Sophomore keeper CJ Graham earned her second shutout of the season – her 16th career shutout – with five saves made on 10 shots faced
HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"It was a really, really tough game tonight. EKU is a fantastic soccer team. The way they battle and compete is next level and I do believe that they're going to pick up some wins in league this year, so I wouldn't be surprised if we saw them at the end.

I'm really proud of our girls. We knew what we were getting our getting ourselves into, having played them twice last year. I thought we stepped up. You know, we didn't let them catch us sleeping, which they can do because they're fast and aggressive.

I thought we managed the game well, we played well, we broke lines well, we created great chances, and, you know, in the end, that's the name of the game – creating chances and scoring goals. I'm just happy to see our team continue to do that."

UP NEXT:
Lipscomb will next welcome the Bellarmine Knights to the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Sunday, Oct. 2. The Bisons will celebrate Socc-tober Fest and kickoff at 1:00 p.m. CT.
