Volleyball Blanks North Florida in Conference Home Opener


NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb put up an impressive night of volleyball in Allen Arena with their second conference sweep of the season from set scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-17. The result took Lipscomb to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in conference play following their 3-1 win over Bellarmine last Saturday.

Two Bisons ended the match with double digit kills, Meg Mersman led the match with 11 kills and Caroline Stogner followed closely behind with 10. Merman hit .450 for the night and added a block assist and an ace for 12.5 points while Stogner finished .286 with an ace and five digs.

Courtney Jones and Addi Pelham produced on the pins for Lipscomb with eight kills for Jones and seven for Pelham. Both Bisons notched a dig for the night while Pelham added a block assist 7.5 points in the contest.

Freshman setter Sophia Hudepohl logged her sixth match with 30+ assists and her third straight with more than 35 assists. She logged 13 assists in both the first and third frames of the contest.

Libero Delaney Smith recorded her second performance with at least 20 digs in a match, just one dig behind her season high of 22, set on Friday, Sept. 23 at Eastern Kentucky.

The Bisons will next welcome the Jacksonville Dolphins to Allen Arena on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. CT.

SET 1
  • The Bisons' offense got off to a quick start with three kills and a Sophia Hudepohl ace in the first five points.
  • Delaney Smith led in digs at the beginning of the match with six at the 15-13 mark.
  • The Ospreys found their stride and pushed to tie at 15-15 until a Hudepohl dump sparked a run to 20-16 to force North Florida into their first timeout.
  • Lipscomb's middles drove the set for the Bisons, both Meg Mersman and Berkley Mischler hit .500 with two kills for Mersman and three for Mischler in the first frame.
  • Addi Pelham (.250) led the Bisons in kills for the first set with 4 including a hammered shot that ripped through the seam of the block to make it 23-19.
  • Mersman put down her third kill of the match to claim the first set for the Bisons 25-21.
  • The Bisons out served the Ospreys with four aces to none from the serving line.
 
SET 2
  • After a kill from Courtney Jones logged the Bisons' first point of the set, the Bisons quickly pushed to an 8-5 lead.
  • The Bisons continued to out-produce from the front row with Mersman, Pelham, Jones, and Stogner each putting down at least two kills in the second frame.
  • Mersman earned her sixth ace of the season to take the Bisons to 19-11.
  • A service ace from Delaney Smith put the Bisons in position to take the second set at 24-15 but a North Florida kill bought the Ospreys a bit of breathing room before a service error ultimately sealed the second frame for the Bisons 25-17.
  • Lipscomb kept up the pressure from the serving line and added two more aces to their tally while their serve receive kept North Florida at zero aces through set two.
  • Jones, Merman, and Pelham led the match with six kills apiece at the end of the second frame.

SET 3
  • A string of Osprey errors set the Bisons up for a 5-0 start to set three.
  • Stogner led the Lipscomb offense with three kills early in the set to take the Bisons up 13-8.
  • Smith and Connelly Renfrow continued their staunch defense of Lipscomb's back court with eight dig between them at the 16-13 mark.
  • Mersman put the hammer down in the third frame with four kills in six points to push the Purple and Gold up 21-14.
  • Pelham tooled off the block to finish the match 25-17 with her seventh kill of the match.
  • North Florida recorded two service aces in the final set, but Lipscomb won the serving game in the contest with seven aces, two of which came from Hudepohl.
 
HERD NOTES
  • Mersman tied her season high for kills in a match with a match-leading 11 kills, she last recorded 11 kills on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Bellarmine.
  • The Bisons out-swung the Ospreys .232 to .109 with 43 kills on 112 attempts to North Florida's 27 kills on 101 attempts.
  • This match marks the fourth match this season and third straight that the Bisons have logged more than 50 digs in a match, marking 50+ digs in all three of Lipscomb's conference matches so far.
  • Tonight's win marks the first time since the 2020 season that the Bisons have swept their opponents for their home opener – the last being their sweep on Monday, Feb. 22 over North Alabama.
