NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's soccer took a trip up the road on Thursday night to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The Lady Bisons are the first team to earn a point against the Commodores after they had won their first five matches this season. Junior Logan McFadden recorded the goal for Lipscomb with a header early in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bisons stepped onto the pitch for their match against the Vanderbilt Commodores with decision, setting a quick pace for the match that continued throughout the contest.
Vanderbilt notched two shots early into the contest before capitalizing on a defensive scramble on Lipscomb's end to put the 'Dores up 1-0 in the seventh minute of the match. Shelby Craft rushed on a leading pass to notch Lipscomb's own first shot of the match, but her shot was collected by the 'Dores keeper.
The Bisons picked up three more shots in the first half, one each from Kale'a Perry, Craft, and Kelli Beiler. Lipscomb's defense held Vanderbilt to eight shots in the first half, only two of which landed on goal.
Lipscomb's offense came out of the break swinging, earning a corner kick and converting on it just two minutes into the half. Junior Logan McFadden handed the 'Dores their first goal against of the season as she pulled down the corner from Perry with a header on the far side of the goal box.
Perry and junior Molly Grant each notched two shots in quick succession looking to capitalize on McFadden's momentum but were unable to find the net. After some tense play, fellow junior Craft logged two more tight shots that were turned away by the Vanderbilt defense.
Sophomore goalkeeper CJ Graham took to the pipes for the Lady Bisons tonight with a total of four shots on goal faced and two saves. Graham made a leaping save to keep the 'Dores from pulling ahead on a free kick with less than fifteen minutes left in the match.
HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"[The fight we showed] was the difference. I mean we've played some good soccer throughout the season, results haven't necessarily always gone our way, but tonight I saw a fight and a desire to win the match that I hadn't seen yet and as a coach as we're getting close to conference that was just so important and the way we battled, the chances we created with phenomenal.
Vanderbilt is a great team. They've got a great coaching staff and wonderful players and we knew that. So, to go into the game and to compete the way we did, I'm just incredibly proud. I love watching this team play and I'm just thankful that I get to do it as their coach."
