Women’s Tennis Opens Season with 5-2 Win Over Hawks

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb's women's tennis team opened their 2023 season with an indoor Sunday morning matchup against the North Dakota Hawks at the Ensworth High School Tennis Center. The Bisons brought down the Hawks in a decisive 5-2 victory that showcased some spectacular singles play from the squad.

"Today was a really good start," said head coach Jamie Aid. "Our returners really stepped out with a purpose today."

Sunday's match saw the Bisons welcome the Hawks to their indoor location on a chilly January morning. Despite an early break from Liza Diachenko and Perri Howard on court three with a 7-5 win, North Dakota took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.

Both pairings on the top courts put up valiant fights as Sasha Dobranos and Sofiia Paladi pushed their opponents to win 7-5 at the top spot while Anja Trbeznik and Alina Cherniaieva made their foes on court two work hard for their 7-6 win.

The squad hit their stride quickly in singles play and five of the six first sets went to the Bisons. All five went on to earn two-set victories on their courts.

Dobranos led the charge on court one 6-3, 6-1 and was closely followed by Taisia Yakunina at the number six spot who earned a 6-4, 6-0 win of her own. Diachenko delivered a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win on court four while Sofiia Paladi earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the number two spot.

Anja Trbeznik sealed the Bisons' win on court four as she claimed the final point in Lipscomb's favor with a 6-4, 7-5 win to end the matchup.

"The veteran leadership was extremely focused today," Aid said. "I think that helped our freshmen grab a hold of their footing in their first collegiate tennis match. I'm very encouraged by what we saw from our team in this match."
