Women's Basketball Ties Program Record for Best ASUN Start with Win Over Royals

THE SHORT STORY

Lipscomb went 10-of-11 in the fourth quarter and ran past Queens (N.C.) for their seventh ASUN win of the season. 

Their 7-1 start to conference play ties the best start in program history which was accomplished during the 2004-05 season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Aleah Sorrentino converted on the first three baskets for the Bisons with easy layups inside. 

The Bisons held a 6-2 advantage with 6:56 to go in the first quarter. Lipscomb stretched their lead to as much as eight moments later on a made jumper from Bella Vinson.

The squad switched to a zone defense early to force the Royals into taking some shots outside. Queens (N.C.) began to hit some shots to close the gap. 

They closed the final two minutes of the first with a 7-0 run to take a 15-13 lead after 10 minutes of action. The Royals put in a three-pointer to increase their lead to five a minute into the second quarter. 

Lipscomb began a run of their own moments later, starting with a jumper from Blythe Pearson. The Bisons tied the game a few possessions later on a three-pointer by Molly Heard, assisted by Ainhoa Cea

Lipscomb stretched their lead to as much as nine in the quarter (29-20) with 3:55 remaining. 

However, Queens (N.C.) closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the squad's lead to two at halftime.

Sorrentino scored 10 points in the first half on 5-of-5 shooting. Lipscomb shot 50% from the floor, while Queens (N.C.) shot 32%. 

The teams traded leads in the early part of the third quarter. 

With 8:35 to go, Bella Vinson gave the Bisons a five-point lead on a three-pointer from the top of the key. 

Two minutes later, the Royals took a four point lead. After an evenly matched nine minutes of play, Lipscomb closed the quarter with five straight points to flip the momentum going into the fourth.  

Lipscomb ran away from the Royals after they tied the game (55-50) with 9:21 to go in the contest.

Aleah Sorrentino got things going to start their fourth-quarter run with a layup inside. Then, Jalyn Holcomb connected on a three-pointer to stretch their lead to five. 

Later in the quarter, Holcomb drove to the basket and got a layup to go through contact, extending the lead. 

The Bisons outscored the Royals 24-18 in the final quarter and took care of business at home 79-68. 

HERD NOTES

  • Vinson led the Bisons with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. 
  • Four Bisons reached double figures on the night.
  • Lipscomb shot 28-of-46 (60.9%) from the floor and went 10-of-11 in the fourth.
  • The Bisons outrebounded the Royals 41-22.
