Women’s Basketball Makes Comeback Win Over Morehead State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bisons returned to their home court in Allen Arena Tuesday night for a matchup against Morehead State (0-2. 0-0 OVC). After a slow start, Lipscomb heated up in the second half and came back after trailing in the first three quarters to claim a 77-73 win over the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons won the tip-off but settled in with a slow start through the first quarter. Morehead State opened the scoring just over two minutes into the action and went on an 11-0 run before the Bisons could break onto the boards.

Molly Heard was the first from the Purple and Gold to find the basket as she walked the ball in and logged a three when she made it to the arc unchallenged.

The Eagles then logged a second-chance layup to hit 13 points in the contest but Heard brought the heat once more with a layup to bring the Bisons back within double-digits as the first quarter wound down.

Morehead State struck first after the break, but the Bisons went to work in the second quarter.

Aleah Sorrentino made a trio of layups back-to-back to answer the Eagles challenge and bring the score to 18-11 in the Eagles favor. Heard logged another three and was joined on the stat sheet by Blythe Pearson and Bella Vinson in short order.

Pearson logged a pair of back-to-back three pointers to cut the Morehead State lead from ten to seven and Vinson followed with a layup and her own set of back-to-back threes to bring the Bisons within one point of the Eagles heading into the halftime break.

The Eagles drew an early foul after the break and moved up to a 32-28 lead with the two free-throws they were awarded. Sorrentino forced a set of layups to keep the Bisons in contention followed by a three from Pearson to halt the Eagles' unchecked run and bring the Bisons within seven points once more.

Morehead State put up a strong offensive showing in the third, pushing up to a 44-35 lead midway through the third frame. Sorrentino then drew a foul coming out of the media timeout and made the ensuing pair of free throws to cut the Eagles lead to seven once more, setting the stage for a layup from Vinson to cut the lead down to five just moments later.

The Bisons began to rain down threes left, right, and center with Pearson, Heard, and Claira McGowan each putting up threes within two minutes of each other.  Heard followed with a pair of layups to bring the Bisons within six points of the Eagles' lead ahead of the break.

A give-and-go three by Pearson from Sorrentino dropped the lead to three, with dueling layups to bring the score to 59-56 in Morehead State's favor at the third quarter break.

Once play resumed, Heard drew a foul and put away a pair of free throws to cut the Eagles' lead down to one point. Pearson and Ainhoa Cea pushed the Bisons to their first lead of the game with back-to-back three pointers before free throws from Vinson and Heard pushed the squad up 67-63.

Pearson logged her seventh three of the night and extended the Bisons lead to seven points with just over four minutes left on the clock. Morehead State fought to get back in the game with a pair of layups, but the Bisons felt the momentum rolling in their favor and responded with layups from McGowan and Vinson to extend their lead further to nine points with just over two minutes left to play.

Vinson popped off late in the game with a set of tough layups as time wound down in the fourth to hold the Eagles off as they attempted a late surge.

Coach Sumski called a timeout with just under 20 seconds left to play, bringing the ball back into Lipscomb scoring territory and after a foul from Morehead State gave Vinson the opportunity to make another free throw and set the Bisons up to hold a 77-73 lead as the final whistle blew.
