Softball Downs MTSU To Close Out FGCU Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Presley Leebrick, Kamrie Rich, and Elise Shewmaker combined for seven hits and four RBIs as the Lipscomb softball team used a three-run first inning to defeat MTSU by the score of 7-1 to close out the FGCU Invitational this morning. The Bisons move to 2-5 overall in the early season, while handing the Blue Raiders their third loss on the season.

The Bisons opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Shewmaker doubled down the left-field line and later scored on a wild pitch to give Lipscomb the early lead. Katelyn Belding and Rich hit back-to-back doubles to score both Leebrick and Belding and push the lead to 3-0.
 

 
After a scoreless second inning, Rich doubled again in the bottom of the third inning to score Shewmaker and extend the lead to 4-0. Meghan Kline followed Rich's double with a sacrifice fly to plate Belding and push the deficit to 5-0.
 

 
Leebrick doubled to left field in the bottom of the fourth to give the Bisons their sixth run of the game and tripled in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring for Lipscomb.
 

 
Emily Yakubowski (2-1) earned her second victory in the circle for the Bisons, allowing only one earned run on five hits in four innings of work. Laine Barefoot gave up only one hit in the final three innings of relief.
 
MTSU's Paige Connors was credited with the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 0.2 innings of work. Kamryn Carcich, Lexi Medlock, and Gretchen Mead combined to give up three earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of relief.
 
Leebrick paced the Bisons from the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, a double, and a triple, while Shewmaker went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and a double and Rich went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two doubles.
 
Kaylyn Belfield and Shewmaker also had a stolen base in the contest.
 
UP NEXT
The Bison will travel to Athens, Georgia on Friday, Feb. 24 to take part in the Georgia Tournament. Lipscomb opens against Hofstra on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
