Women’s Tennis Falls to MTSU Despite Strong Singles Showing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Lipscomb women's tennis welcomed the MTSU Blue Raiders to the Ensworth High School Tennis Center Saturday morning for their final indoor home match of the 2022-23 season. The Bisons put up a huge battle in singles play but with a key victory in the last two courts playing in singles, the Blue Raiders took home the 4-3 win.

"This was a hard loss today," said head coach Jamie Aid. "We had the momentum going in singles and then just let our foot off the gas."

Lipscomb's squad stumbled in doubles play and the Blue Raiders took advantage to claim a 6-2 win over Alina Cherniaieva and Anja Trbeznik on court one, followed by a 6-3 win on court three over Liza Diachenko and Perri Howard on court three to quickly claim the doubles point.

The Bisons turned up the heat in singles play, sparking aggressive beginnings on all six courts. The Blue Raiders responded to the challenge, claiming the first two points in singles play to take an early 3-0 lead.

Alina Cherniaeva fell 2-6, 2-6 to her opponent on court five and Anja Trbeznik fell shortly after to her own foe 4-6, 2-6.

The urgency came through on courts one and six for Lipscomb in a huge response from Sasha Dobranos and Perri Howard. Dobranos claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win at the top spot while Howard claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win on court six to cut MTSU's lead to one.

The battle continued on two and four as Sofiia Paladi and Liza Diachenko both took their opponents to three sets. Both Bisons started out their tiebreakers with the early lead, but the Blue Raiders clinched their victory with the 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win on court two over Paladi.

Diachenko dug deep on four for the final point of the match, going toe to toe with her opponent for a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7-1) victory to conclude the match.

"This is a young team and that's something we just continue to work on in practice," Aid finished. "We are going to have a lot of close matches and we have to want to be in those moments, rather than being scared of them."
