Softball Rallies to Defeat Youngstown State in Walk-Off Fashion, Stumbles Against Providence

THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb used a four-run bottom of the fifth inning to even the score and then a game-winning hit by Kamrie Rich to score Elise Shewmaker gave the Bisons a thrilling 5-4 win over Youngstown State to open up Day 2 of the Purple & Gold Challenge.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Youngstown State scored their first run in the top of the third inning to take the early lead. The Friars extended their lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning and two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
 
Presley Rader opened the scoring for the Bisons in the bottom of the fifth as she connected on a 1-1 pitch and sent it to deep left-center field to score Brinkley Kita from third base.
 

 
Presley Leebrick continued the momentum as she plated Briyana Wright, Joie Giarrizzo, and Katelyn Belding on a double to right-center field to even the score at 4-4.
 

 
After a scoreless sixth inning, Elise Shewmaker led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to the shortstop and later advanced to third on another single by Leebrick. Rich made contact on a 0-2 pitch and sent it back to the pitcher, which allowed Shewmaker to score the game-winning run.
 

 
Emily Yakubowski was credited with the win in the circle for the Bisons, allowing only two hits in 2.0 innings of relief. Macey Ogle allowed only three earned runs on six hits as she pitched five innings in her first career start.
 
Bree Kohler, Sophie Howell, and Devan Ryan all pitched for the Penguins during the game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work.
 
Shewmaker and Leebrick both had multi-hit games for Lipscomb and combined for three RBIs and a run scored. Rich, Maci Cunconan, and Rader all registered a hit in the non-conference win.

THE SHORT STORY
Providence tallied two runs in both the top of the second and top of the third innings to clinch the non-conference win in the final game of Day 2 of the Purple & Gold Challenge.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Providence opened the scoring with two runs on one hit in the top of the second inning and extended their lead to 4-0 with a two-run top of the third inning.
 
Lipscomb broke through in the bottom of the seventh as Cunconan tripled to right-center field on a 3-1 count to give the Bisons a baserunner late in the game. Rader scored Cunconan from third in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly down the right field line.
 
The Friars were able to obtain the final out to clinch the non-conference win.
 
Laine Barefoot was credited with the loss in the circle for the Bisons, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Emily Yakubowski gave up only three hits in 4.1 innings of relief.
 
Providence's Tori Grifone gave up only one earned run on two hits in 7.0 innings of work.
 
Cunconcan registered both of Lipscomb's hits in the later game, adding a runs scored.

Lipscomb will close out the Purple & Gold Challenge tomorrow as they host Saint Louis at 3 p.m. CT.
