THE SHORT STORY
After Western Kentucky scored two runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1, the Bisons rattled off two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by a game-winning hit by
Jack Busch in the bottom of the seventh, to clinch the come-from-behind win over the Hilltoppers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Kentucky opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs on two hits to take the early lead.
Lipscomb responded in the bottom of the second inning as Busch doubled to left center field to score
Maci Cunconan from first base to put the Bisons on the board.
After the Hilltoppers extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning, the Bisons used a sacrifice fly by
Maci Cunconan to score
Josey Polk and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Lipscomb pushed across its third run on a fielding error by Western Kentucky that scored
Kelly Paulson from third base.
After holding the Hilltoppers scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, the Bisons loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with only one out.
Tori Womack drew a walk in the next at-bat to send
Kaylyn Belfield home to even the score at 4-4.
Western Kentucky was able to obtain the second out, but Busch hit a game-winning single down the left-field line to score Polk and give Lipscomb the non-conference win.
Laine Barefoot picked up the victory in the circle for the Bisons, allowing only two earned run on six hits in 5.0 innings of work, while
Brinkley Kita gave up two earned runs on two hits in the first 2.0 innings of the contest.
Western Kentucky's Katie Gardner was credited with the loss in the circle for the Hilltoppers, allowing three earned runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Busch, Polk, and
Meghan Kline combined for six hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored to pace the Bisons, while Belfield,
Kamrie Rich, and
Maci Cunconan also collected hits in the win.
