Softball Collects Two Wins over Eastern Kentucky on Senior Day

THE SHORT STORY
The Bisons used a three-run top of the second inning, a  four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Katelyn Belding, and a two-run shutout by Emily Yakubowski to clinch the win in the opening game of the series this afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning of play, the Bisons broke through first as Maci Cunconan led off with a single and made it to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Elise Shewmaker. Briyana Wright stepped up and bunted to score Cunconan from third to put Lipscomb on the board first.
 

 
Kamrie Rich singled up the middle, two batters later, to score both Kaylyn Belfield and Wright to extend the lead to 3-0.
 

 
The Bisons pushed their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth as Cunconan reached based on a fielding error by the Colonels to score Joie Giarrizzo from third to push the lead to 4-0.
 

 
Belding took the second pitched she saw, later in the same inning, and smashed it over the fence in left field for a three-run home run to extend the lead to 7-0.
 

 
Lipscomb was able to obtain the final out to clinch the ASUN victory in the opening game.
 
Yakubowski only surrendered two hits in 7.0 innings to clinch her team-leading 11th win in the circle.
 
Eastern Kentucky's Lauren Narvaez was credited with the loss in the circle, giving up three earned runs on 12 hits in 6.0 innings of work.
 
Rich went 4 for 4 from the dish with two RBIs to pace the Bisons, while Presley Leebrick, Tori Womack, and Cunconan all tallied multiple hits in the win. Josey Polk and Belding also collected hits in the contest.

THE SHORT STORY
After Eastern Kentucky opened with a run in the top of the second innings, Lipscomb tallied two runs in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the sixth, including a two-run inside-the-park home run by Wright, to clinch the win in the later game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonels opened the scoring in the later game with a single run on one hit in the top of the first inning.
 
The Bisons responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as Presley Rader hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Polk, who led off with a single to right field, from third base to even the score at 1-1.
 

 
Kelly Paulson hit a single to right field, in the next at-bat, to score Cunconan from third to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead.
 

 
After a scoreless fifth inning, Lipscomb tallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Polk drew a walk in the first at-bat to give the Bisons a runner on base. Wright took the second pitch she saw down the left field line and sprinted around the bases to complete the two-run inside-the-park home run to push the lead to 4-1.


 
Lipscomb was able to clinch the win by obtaining the final three outs in the top of the seventh.
 
Brinkley Kita picked up her sixth win in the circle for Lipscomb, allowing only one earned run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work.
 
Eastern Kentucky's Brooke Davis allowed four earned runs on eight hits to be credited with the loss in the circle.
 
Paulson paced the Bisons in the later game, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Belfield, Leebrick, Rich, Polk, Cunconan, and Wright all collected hits in the win.
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons will return to Draper Diamond for the final time during the 2023 season tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they will look for the sweep of Eastern Kentucky.
