HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as
Kaylyn Belfield led off with a double down the left-field line that turned into an inside-the-park home run on a throwing error by Eastern Kentucky to put Lipscomb on the board first.
After
Josey Polk singled and both
Jack Busch and
Kamrie Rich drew walks,
Maci Cunconan drew a walk with bases loaded to score Rich and extend the lead for the Bisons.
Polk later scored on an RBI groundout by
Kyndall Crawford to push the lead to 3-0.
Eastern Kentucky responded with two runs in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Bisons used an RBI single by
Presley Leebrick to score
Kelly Paulson to extend the lead back to 4-2.
Both Polk and Cunconan drew walks in their next at-bats, later in the same inning, with bases loaded to score both Belfield and Rich respectively to give the Bisons a 6-2 lead.
After a scoreless next two innings, Lipscomb used a lead-off single by Paulson and an RBI groundout by Rich, which scored Paulson, to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Bisons closed out their scoring in the bottom of the sixth as Leebrick singled up the middle to plate Paulson from second and push the lead to 8-2.
The Colonels responded with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh, but Lipscomb was able to obtain the final two outs to clinch the weekend sweep.
Laine Barefoot picked up her third win in the circle for Lipscomb by not allowing an earned run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work, while
Emily Yakubowski gave up three earned runs on three hits.
Eastern Kentucky's Emma Bethel was credited with the loss in the circle, giving up three earned runs on four hits in 1.0 innings of work, while Brooke Davis gave up two earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of relief.
Paulson and Leebrick combined to go 6-8 from the plate with three runs and two RBIs to pace the Bisons in the win, while Belfield, Polk, Cunconan, and
Meghan Kline all collected hits for Lipscomb.
