HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
In the final game one at Ken Dugan Field this season, Lipscomb battle Jacksonville State in a critical matchup that will help determine part of how the ASUN standing will play out ahead of the conference tournament in DeLand, Florida next week.Â
Lipscomb held the top spot entering the weekend with a game lead over FGCU. Like the Bisons, the Gamecocks have already clinched a spot in the postseason but are playing for seeding in the tournament.Â
The Bisons took care of business in game one, holding the Gamecocks to one run in a 6-1 win on Thursday and Ken Dugan Field.
The Gamecock got on the board first in game one in their opening at-bats on a double that reached the right field wall, scoring the bases runner from first who reached on a bunt single. However, Logan Van Treeck fanned two in the frame, sending the final batter of the frame away swinging.
Lipscomb evened the score in the home half of the third frame, starting with a bunt single from Parks Bouck. David Copepdge was then hit by a pitch followed by another single bunt single from Will Lee, this time to the pitcher. An error on the throw by the second basement advanced runners to second and third and scored Bouck.Â
The Bisons scored another run in the fourth to take their first lead of the contest. Bouck notched his second hit on Thursday with a single to second base and advanced to second on an error by the Gamecock's second basemen, allowing Trace Willhoite home, who reached on a double down the left-field line to open the frame.Â
To add to the Bisons' lead, Austin Kelly notched his 19th homer of the season on a solo rocket that landed well over the right field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 3-1 advantage.Â
Lipscomb ace Logan Van Treeck settled down after allowing the run in the opening period and held the Gamecocks scoreless in his last six innings on the mound.Â
Lipscomb plated three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, the first coming on a fielder's choice to first by Jake Berg to score Willhoite, who singled prior, from third. Then, Coppedge doubled to left field on a ball that looked like it might go the distance, to score two more runs increase the Bisons' lead to six runs entering the final attempts for the Gamecocks.Â
Jacksonville State opened the ninth with a single to left center and then a hit-by-pitch to plate two early base runner, but a grounder to third allowed for the force out, and then an infield fly-out and another fly-out to right field broke up the Gamecock's threat, giving the Bisons their 21st win in ASUN play, the most in program history.
HERD NOTES:Â
- Van Treeck adds another win to his season total, giving him seven on the year.
- Van Treeck, through seven innings against Gamecocks, allowed six hits with eight strikeouts and just one run allowed.Â
- Van Treeck eight strikeouts increase is season total to 97, putting him tied for fifth in program history in single-season strikeouts.Â
- Hayden Frank earned his fourth save of the year, pitching for two effective innings with three hits allowed.Â
