HOW IT HAPPENED
The top-seeded Bisons worked its way back from an 0-2 hole in Pool A to secure their spot in the ASUN Championship final after taking down the No. 3 seed Liberty, 7-3, Saturday evening at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
Lipscomb wasted no time jumping out to an early lead. Caleb Ketchup opened the Bisons' attempt with a double down the left-field line. He then stole third, followed by a walk from Alex Vergara to put runners at the corner. A passed ball by the Flames brought Ketchup home and advanced Vergara to second. Mason Lundgrin walked in his at-bat, and then Trace Willhoite was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
The Bisons' top home run hitter, Austin Kelly, was due up and did what he's done all season, as he belted a home run over the right field wall to give Lipscomb a 5-0 lead with no outs. The homer put the Bisons at 100 on the season.
Lipscomb eventually loaded the bases again but couldn't add more to their lead after a hot first inning. The Flames scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth on a fielder's choice with a runner on third for a 5-1 score. Despite the run, Braydon Tucker continued his solid outing.
After closing out the final inning of the elimination game win against Jacksonville a day prior, Tucker was called upon against against Liberty and produced, pitched three scoreless innings before the Flames' run in the fourth.
Liberty added two more in the fifth, starting with a two-out ground-rule double to right field after a walk and then a triple down the right-field line, cutting the Bisons' lead to two runs (5-3). But, Will Lee added a run for the Bisons in the sixth on a sac fly, with Parks Bouck on third.
Alex Vergara then added an insurance run and perhaps put the icing on the cake in the seventh on a solo homer to right-center field, increasing Lipscomb's lead to four runs.
Matthew Bohnert entered the contest on the hill in the fifth for the Bisons and shut the Flames down in the final four, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts which earned him the save.
That was all that the Bisons needed as Lipscomb closed things out, holding the Flames at bay to advance to the ASUN title game Sunday.
HERD NOTES:
- Braydon Tucker improved to 7-0 on the season following the win, and Matthew Bohnert got his third save of the season.
