NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb volleyball team secured their first victory of the season in a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee State Saturday night. The Bisons improved to 1-4 on the season and 7-6 against Tennessee State in the NCAA Division I era.
Lipscomb dominated the match with double-digit kills in each of the three sets. Jada DiVita led the Herd for the second straight outing, with 12 kills, landing her along with Delaney Smith on the All-Tournament team. As a squad, the Bisons swung at a .434 percent showing, the highest of the season, with only seven attack errors. They also ended with seven aces and six blocks.
Set 1:
The Bisons were on the attack, connecting on several kills early. Lipscomb led 8-3, which forced a TSU timeout. Early blocks kept the Bisons' momentum firmly ahead in the first set. An eight-point run gave the Bisons the cushion they needed in set one. The Bisons won the kill battle in the first frame 14-5, propelling them into a set one win.
Set 2:
Lipscomb held an early 4-1 lead in set two, but TSU rallied off three straight for a 5-4 score. An eight-point swing gave Lipscomb an 11-4 advantage. The Tigers managed to hang around, cutting its deficit to four (15-11). They then shortened it to three (17-15), forcing a Lipscomb timeout; two straight kills cut the lead down. Out of the timeout, misques by the Tigers stretched the Bisons' lead back out to four. From there, the Bisons were able to control the lead for the rest of the set, finishing with a 25-19 victory to go up 2-0.
Set 3:
TSU would take a 3-1 lead to start set three. Lipscomb answered with four straight and then eight of the following nine to keep a healthy lead throughout. The Bisons put up their highest kill total of the match (16) in set three, which guided them to the final set win to complete the sweep.
