Penalty Kick Goal Earns Bisons a Win Over North Florida

Location: Jacksonville, Fla. (Hodges Stadium)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb women's soccer made their way to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on the North Florida Ospreys in a rainy Thursday night matchup. A penalty kick goal from Kelli Beiler in the seventh minute of action stood unanswered at the end of regulation time and the Bisons claimed their third consecutive ASUN win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Thursday night's highly anticipated matchup got off to a stormy start both literally and metaphorically. Just five minutes prior to kickoff, a September storm blew into Jacksonville and set the tone for a competitive matchup between Lipscomb and North Florida.

The two programs battled for dominance from the get-go but the Bisons were the ones to take advantage of a slip up in the Ospreys' 18-yard box. A foul from North Florida awarded Lipscomb a penalty kick just inside the seventh minute of play and Kelli Beiler buried her third penalty kick of the season to give the Bisons the early lead.

North Florida stuck back quickly with a shot on goal that netminder Sara Kile summarily denied just 23 seconds after Beiler's goal. Faith Adams brought the heat back into the Ospreys' zone with a shot low to the center of the net that was collected by North Florida's keeper 12 minutes into action.

Kiara Pralle put her own shot on the stat line just shy of the 17-minute mark but missed the mark and possession continued to trade hands. The Ospreys made their way into the Bisons' defensive end and took a shot from the outside of the arc that flew to the right of the goal just as a lighting strike sent the match into a lightning delay 22 minutes into play.

Play resumed and the Ospreys once more brought the action into the Bisons' defensive end with a shot to the top right corner of the net that Kile kept from the net with a leaping save to preserve the Bisons' lead in the 24th minute.

The Bisons continued to withstand a stream of Osprey attacks that were denied by Kile and Lipscomb's defense. Marcella Cash stepped in to deliver a driving shot less than a minute before the break, but the score held as the first frame finished.

Both squads came back with a vengeance in the second half, the Ospreys sending a shot over the crossbar just under two minutes into the return to action. The momentum swung back into Lipscomb's favor shortly after; however, and Beiler returned down the field to put a dangerous shot on goal after a ship in from Pralle was knocked down in the box by a header from Lucy Ream.

The two programs continued to trade possession and it became a contest between the keepers to hold off the two aggressive offenses battling on the field in Jacksonville. Kile delivered two enormous stops back-to-back in the 60th and 61st minute of play to hold onto the Bisons' lead.

Battle continued to rage in the midfield as both squads put their strength to the test attempting to control possession in the center third of the field. The Ospreys managed to put two more shots on the stat sheet, but they failed to find the net as the clock wound down to zero and the Bisons' ASUN record climbed to 3-0 on Thursday night in Jacksonville.
