Women's Basketball Beats Austin Peay in Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Three Bisons reached double-figures in women's basketball's 61-51 victory over Austin Peay (9-10, 2-3 ASUN) Saturday afternoon in Clarksville.

Aleah Sorrentino and Molly Heard led the scoring for the Bisons with 15 points against the Governors, followed by Claira McGowan, who put up 13 points off the bench.

The win marks the 11th for the Bisons this season (11-7) and their fourth win against ASUN competition (4-1) through three weeks of their conference slate.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Austin Peay wasted no time jumping ahead of the Bisons in the first quarter. The Govs raced to their early advantage by shooting 4-of-5 from the floor, entering the first media timeout with a 10-2 advantage.

Lipscomb settled in and responded with a 10-0 run to close out the quarter, forcing the Govs into missing their final eight shot in the frame. The Bisons held the Govs without a point for over seven minutes after giving up 10 points in the first few possessions.

Aleah Sorrentino put in two free throws with 17 seconds remaining in the opening quarter which gave the Bisons their first lead of the afternoon at 12-10.

The Bisons began to stretch their lead in the second quarter, slowly putting the pieces together on the offensive end. Lipscomb shot 7-of-15 from the floor in the second quarter and went 2-of-3 from deep, which helped extend their lead to double-digits at the half (31-21).

Awesome came from all over the lineup in the frame as six players scored for the Bisons in the second quarter, led by Claira McGowan, who logged her five points on a runner just outside the lane and then a transition three-pointer.

The Bisons went up by as much as 15 in the third quarter but settled for an 11-point advantage entering the final quarter.

Austin Peay cut their deficit to single digits twice in the fourth quarter, but each time, the Bisons answered and stretched their lead back out, in control for a majority of Saturday's ball game.

Lipscomb controlled clock late and got out of Clarksville with a ten-point victory on the road in the ASUN by a 61-51 final.

HERD NOTES:

  • Lipscomb shot 41 percent from the floor and held Austin Peay to a 32 percent clip on the afternoon.
