Softball Splits First Day at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lipscomb softball earned a set of split results in their first day of competition at the Furman Invitational. The Bisons fell 2-1 to the Georgetown Hoyas in their first game of the weekend but bounced back for an impressive 7-3 win over the Towson Tigers.

GAME 1: GEORGETOWN 2, LIPSCOMB 1
The Bisons stepped onto the field with big energy Friday morning in Greenville, getting a runner on base in the top of the first and holding Georgetown to a three-up, three-down first inning of their own.

Lipscomb's squad then put three runners on base across the course of the second inning and once more held the Hoyas to a three-batter inning as the second frame came to a close.

The Purple and Gold struck first, logging an RBI in the top of the third inning as Katelyn Belding sent up a fly ball that was caught by Georgetown's right fielder, giving Elle Smith enough time to round the bases and cross home plate.

After going three up and three down once more in the bottom of the third, the Hoyas evened things up with a RBI of their own in the middle of their turn at bat in the fourth frame to bring things to a 1-1 standstill.

The fifth and sixth inning passed without runs for either squad and as the game looked to be heading towards extra innings with a scoreless top of the seventh for the Bisons, Georgetown logged their second RBI with their last batter in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 2-1 lead and the victory.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 7, TOWSON 3
Lipscomb's squad fought to turn their luck around in their second game of the day, holding the Towson Tigers to just four batters in the first inning with just one walk. Elle Smith made her way around to second base on a pass ball from the Tigers in the bottom of the first, but the score held at zeros for both teams after the first frame.

The second inning passed in much the same way as the first with both squads putting runners on base but ultimately failing to send anyone around to home plate. The Bisons' luck began to turn in the bottom of the third, however, and Josey Polk ripped a double down the left field line to send Katelyn Belding and Brenna Sherman home for a pair of RBIs to put the squad up 2-0.

Lipscomb's defense stepped up to hold the Tigers to a three up, three down inning n the top of the fourth and despite getting loaded bases, the squad remained at a 2-0 lead through the fourth frame. As the Bisons again held off Towson through the top of the fifth inning, the Bisons popped off in the bottom of the fifth.

Sherman drew a walk to begin the inning, and a short turn later, Josey Polk gained first base on a fielding error by the Tigers' first-baseman, allowing Sherman time to make her way around to third base on the error. As Elise Shewmaker stepped up to the plate, Polk stole second to put the Bisons in a strong scoring position.

Shewmaker took advantage of the squad's opportunity and claimed first base with a sacrificial bunt on the fielder's choice, giving Sherman the opportunity to cross home plate and put the Bisons up 3-0. Shewmaker followed Polk's lead and stole second base herself during Alyssa Hasting's time at the plate.

Hastings too claimed first base with a sacrifice bunt on the fielder's choice and the Bisons again scored on the play, this time with Polk crossing home plate. In ensuing fashion, Hastings then stole second base during Presley Rader's time at bat and Rader herself drew a walk to take first base and give the Bisons a bases-loaded opportunity.

Joie Giarrizzo stepped up to bat next for the Bisons and drew a walk from the Tigers, advancing all the batters around and sending Shewmaker home to put the squad up 5-0. Elle Smith then took the batter's box for the Purple and Gold and sent a single up the middle to advance Lipscomb's runners once more and Shewmaker found home plate to increase the Bisons' lead once more.

As Lauren Higginbotham stepped in to pinch hit for Kaylyn Belfield late in the inning and her fly ball to center field gave Rader the time to cross home plate and give the Bisons a 7-0 lead as the fifth frame came to a close.

Towson responded with a strong top of the sixth inning, claiming three runs of their own with a trio of RBIs and despite Belding making it around to second base in the Bisons' turn at the plate, the score held at 7-3 in Lipscomb's favor moving into the seventh inning. The Tigers were unable to put more runs on the board in the top of the seventh, however, and the Bisons claimed their first win of the weekend in a decisive fashion.
