Women’s Basketball Drops Game to the Governors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's basketball welcomed the Austin Peay Governors to Allen Arena for a midday ASUN matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Bisons fought hard but the Governors came to play and took home a 73-60 win over Lipscomb's squad.

Claira McGowan led the Bisons scoring group with 20 points in the contest, closely followed by Molly Heard with 17 points of her own. Blythe Pearson made an impact all across the court with seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The two squads clashed as the game got under way with each side holding off their opponents to a stalemate that took just over two minutes to finally break. The Governors got on the board first with a three pointer that set the game off on a hot pace.

The Bisons responded just twelve seconds later with a jumper from Claira McGowan to bring things within one point before Austin Peay put the pedal to the metal and logged a layup, a free throw, and a three-pointer to go up 9-2 with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.

McGowan drew a personal foul and logged a pair of free throws to bring the Bisons up to four just ahead of the five-minute mark. The Governors sent in a three to pass the 10-point threshold, but the Bisons responded with a three of their own from Taylor Bowen to hold the difference at five points.

The two teams continued to trade blows with layups, jumpers, and threes trading hands back and forth for each squad to a 17-14 mark at the end of the first quarter break in the Governors' favor.

Lipscomb's squad came out fighting in the second quarter with a jumper from Molly Heard just 14 seconds back into play to bring the Bisons within one point of the Austin Peay lead. The Governors responded with good shots of their own and a three-pointer and jumper inside the arc from Austin Peay's offense widened the gap once more.

The Bisons fought their way back through the Austin Peay momentum to come within two with a pair of threes from McGowan and yet another from Heard. Missed shots from both squads and another pair of made free throws from McGowan brought the two squads tied for the first time in the game before a late 7-0 run for the Governors brought the contest to 40-33 ahead of the halftime break.

Austin Peay found another gear as the second half began, putting up another 7-0 run to begin the third quarter and go up 47-33 before the Bisons could find their basket again. A set of back-to-back layups from Heard and McGown sought to break the Governors' momentum, but the Austin Peay offense kept their pressure high.

Lipscomb's squad fell into a scoring drought for nearly three and a half minutes as the Governors' defense closed in on the Bisons until Blythe Pearson put up a layup to bring the game to a 51-39 mark in Austin Peay's favor.

The two squads continued to battle and the Bisons worked to chip away at the Governors' lead. A big effort from Aleah Sorrentino as the final quarter began pulled the Bisons within 10 points of the Governors and Lipscomb's squad caught some momentum as the final minutes ticked on with a 5-2 run to bring the game to a 61-54 mark.

The Bisons kept chipping as a jumper from McGowan and a layup from Ainhoa Cea pulled the squads within five. Austin Peay fought right back against the Bisons, however, and soon logged a three pointer and a layup of their own to extend their lead to 10 points once more.

A late push from the Governors extended their lead in the final minute and the Bisons fell 73-60 to Austin Peay in their 25th game of the season.
