Softball Knocked Down By UNC in First Game at Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Lipscomb softball took a trip East this weekend to compete in the Carolina Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Bisons put up a strong fight through the first three innings but were overwhelmed by the Tar Heels late in the game and fell 12-4 to the tournament hosts.

After a rainy start to the weekend rearranged the tournament schedule, the Purple and Gold got off to a slow start in their first game of the weekend. The Bisons went three up, three down to open the contest with three putouts preventing the Bisons from getting a runner on base.

The Tar Heels quickly demonstrated their offensive aggression, tallying three runs in the bottom of the first after a messy inning from the Bisons. Lipscomb's squad looked to heat things up in the second frame as Presley Rader drew a walk and advanced as far as second base, but UNC held firm and soon took their own turn at the plate.

North Carolina's offense hunted for another big inning, fighting their way to a bases-loaded opportunity, but the Bisons fended off the onslaught to hold the score at 3-0 towards UNC at the end of the seoncd frame.

Lipscomb's squad found their feet in the top of the third, putting all three of their first batters in the inning on base and scoring their first run as Alyssa Hastings was hit by a pitch and advanced the runners around to send Briyana Wright across home plate.

Brenna Sherman tallied an RBI as the next Bison up to bat, sending a single up the middle to bat in Macyn Kirby. An error by the Tar Heels' left fielder gave Elle Smith the opportunity to cross home plate as well, bringing the game tied at 3-3 as the inning drew to a close after a pitching change for UNC resulting in two putouts and a strikeout for the next three Lipscomb players to take the batter's box.

North Carolina's offense did not take the challenge poised by the Bisons lightly, recording a two RBI single, a run off of a fielder's choice, and a three RBI homer for a decisive six-run inning to go up 9-3 heading into the fourth inning.

Lipscomb's squad fought to get back in the game as the fourth frame began, earning a fourth run as Macyn Kirby knocked a fly ball out to left field that was caught by the North Carolina defense after Lauren Higginbotham had made her way across home plate.

The Tar Heels pressed their advantage, however, hitting their tenth run of the game with a single midway through the bottom of the fourth to record an RBI and extend their lead over Lipscomb to six runs.

The tournament hosts kept the pressure up, holding the Bisons to a three up, three down inning in the top of the fifth before scoring two secure a run-rule victory over the Bisons in the first game of the tournament.
