Softball Earns Walk-Off Single Win Over Mount St. Mary’s

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Lipscomb softball began their second game of the weekend at the Carolina Classic early Friday morning as they took on Mount St. Mary's in a cloudy showdown. The Bisons took an early lead with four runs in the first inning recovering from a late surge by the Mounts with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh including a walk-off single from Josey Polk to claim the squad's first win of the weekend.

After holding the Mounts to a scoreless top of the first, the Bisons stepped up to the plate with a fire in their eyes. Elle Smith drew a walk in the squad's first at-bat of the game, advancing to second base a short while later on a single from Alyssa Hastings.

A single from Brenna Sherman then sent Smith around to home plate, opening the scoring in Lipscomb's favor. Elise Shewmaker then stepped up to the plate and sent a homer out to center field, batting in Hastings and Sherman before she too crossed home plate to give the squad an impressive 4-0 lead before the Mounts put the Bisons down to end the frame.

Both squads locked down their defense for the second inning, going three up, three down on both sides to keep the game moving quickly. Mount St. Mary's responded to the Bisons' challenge with a pair of runs at the end of the top of the third, cutting the Bisons' lead to two runs.

The game then entered a standstill with both teams putting runners on bases, getting as far as third base in some cases, but ultimately holding each other from scoring until the top of the seventh when the Mounts knocked a homer of their own to center field for three RBI to go up 5-4 as the Bisons returned to the batter's box.

The Bisons dug in deep in the bottom of the seventh, putting three batters on base in their first three at bats with singles once more from Smith, Hastings, and Sherman to give the Purple and Gold a bases-loaded opportunity.

Shewmaker then knocked a sac fly to center field to advance the Bisons runners around the bases and send Smith across home plate, bringing the game tied once more at 5-5. Josey Polk stepped in as a designated hitter for Presley Rader and sent a single into right field, batting in Hastings for a walk-off single win.
