Softball Sweeps Final Day of Carolina Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Lipscomb softball delivered an incredible final day of competition at the Carolina Classic. The Bisons put up a 5-3 win over George Washington before delivering a 1-0 shutout over the Tar Heels to end their weekend with a 3-1 record at the tournament.

GAME 1: LIPSCOMB 5, GEORGE WASHINGTON 3
Lipscomb's squad stepped onto the field ready to play in their early morning matchup against the Revolutionaries.

The two teams felt each other out after the Bisons' Saturday win, holding each other to a scoreless first inning as the squads battled to draw first blood.

As the designated visitors, the Bisons struck first in the top of the second inning as a sac fly from Elle Smith sent Josey Polk across home plate to give the Purple and Gold an early 1-0 lead. The Bisons kept the pressure on the Revolutionaries defensively, holding George Washington to just a single in the bottom of the second with three putouts to carry their lead to the third frame.

Lipscomb's squad capitalized in their next at-bats, quickly loading the bases with Brenna Sherman, Elise Shewmaker, and Kaylyn Belfield. Josey Polk took advantage of the setup to smack a grand slam homer to right field and push the Bisons to a massive 5-0 lead, preserved through the end of the inning by the Bisons' defense.

After a three up, three down inning for Lipscomb's squad, the Revolutionaries broke into the scoring column with a double to the Bisons' right field that allowed an RBI for George Washington.

George Washington's squad managed to score twice more in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bisons locked down on defense to halt the Revolutionaries in their tracks and preserve their 5-3 lead through the end of the game.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 1, NORTH CAROLINA 0
Lipscomb's squad fought hard to find their feet against tournament host North Carolina, but the home team came to play and the Bisons brought the heat from their earlier game to fuel their fight in their last game of the weekend.

Both squads put runners on base at least twice throughout the first four innings, but the stalemate held until the top of the fifth inning when Briyana Wright recorded the second home run of her career with a homer to left field to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.

The Tar Heels fought to even the score through the end of the game, but the Bisons' defense locked it down once more and held off the tournament hosts to claim their second win of the day and their third win of the weekend.

With the 1-0 shutout score, freshman Courtney Sauer recorded her first collegiate complete game shutout win and brought the Bisons to a 5-6 overall record ahead of the squad's home opener next week.

UP NEXT
The Bisons will welcome familiar foe Belmont to Draper Diamond on Wednesday, Feb. 28th for their home opener. First pitch is set for 3:00pm CT.
