Women’s Tennis Takes Down ‘Tops 5-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's tennis secured their fourth consecutive win of the season Sunday afternoon as they earned a 5-2 win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a nail-biting finish. With the match's fate in question up to the final two singles matches, Sonia Pieczynska and Sofiia Paladi put in incredible performances to clinch the win and push the Bisons up to their ultimate 5-2 lead.
 
The Purple and Gold made a statement early with impressive fight from the duos on all three courts. Sofiia Paladi and Mariya Dolzhenko battled for a 6-2 win at the top spot and were joined shortly after in the win column by Anja Trbeznik and Sonia Pieczynska as they claimed a 6-2 win on court three.
 
Sasha Dobranos and Rut Galindo were up 4-3 on their Western Kentucky opponents on court two when the doubles point was decided in Lipscomb's favor and their match was abandoned in favor of getting singles play under way.
 
Dobranos put the heat on her Hilltopper opponent in singles play, delivering a quick 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot to give the Bisons a cushion as the afternoon continued. The Tops struck back with a straight set win over Anja Trbeznik on court five to get back in the fight (6-3, 6-2), but Mariya Dolzhenko brought the Bisons' once more into a two point lead with her 7-5, 6-3 win over her own opponent at the No. 4 spot.
 
Things heated up and the two squads traded set wins as the match continued, with Western Kentucky ultimately claiming the next point after a drawn-out three-set battle on court three saw Galindo fall to her opponent 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
 
In the final two matches of the day, both Pieczynska and Paladi won their first set and dropped the second only to deliver incredible comeback wins in their third sets to secure Lipscomb's win. Sonia Pieczynska clinched the Bisons' win with her 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win on court six after recovering from 2-3 and 3-4 deficits in the third set.
 
Sofiia Paladi came back from being down three games to one in the final set as well as being down six points to one in the tiebreak to claim her 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (10-8) victory, earning Lipscomb a final score of 5-2 in their fourth match of the season.

Lipscomb's squad will next travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Saturday, Feb. 10th to face Middle Tennessee in a matchup beginning at 1:00pm CT.
