JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Claira McGowan and Aleah Sorrentino recorded double-doubles in the Bisons' 58-52 win over Jacksonville (6-16, 2-7 ASUN) Wednesday night. The Bisons improved to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play with the win.
McGowan finished with her first double double and a career-high in rebounds. She scored 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, with 11 rebounds. The junior also went 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Sorrentino logged her second-straight double-double and the fourth of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Molly Heard also scored double figures for the Bisons, scoring 14 points, including three three-pointers. Ainhoa Cea filled the stat sheet Wednesday night, scoring eight points with seven assists and eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Jacksonville controlled the majority of the first quarter, working for as much as a nine-point advantage in the first quarter. However, Lipscomb executed their way back into contention, outscoring the Dolphins17-12 in the second quarter. A three-pointer from Heard, her second of the night, cut the Bisons' deficit to three with 8:45 on the clock in the second period.
At the end of the first half, McGowan gave the Bisons their first lead since the opening portion of the first quarter on a short jumper inside the painted area. However, with 23 seconds left in the second, Jacksonville's Jalisa Dunlap answered, knocking down a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 31-30 lead at the break.
Heard buried a triple on the second half's opening possession to retake the lead. The Bisons led by as much as seven in the frame, but a run midway through the quarter by the Dolphins evened the score at 38-all. Lipscomb outscored Jacksonville 8-2 in the final two minutes to take a 46-40 lead entering the final quarter.
Jacksonville stormed back in the fourth to take a 52-50 lead with a little under three minutes left. With 31 seconds left, Claira McGowan got a clutch right-handed runner to fall which evened the score at 52-all. After the play, a scrum resulting in three technical fouls and personal foul, led to two free throws for McGowan and the ball back.
McGowan connected on the back end of the technical shots, but was fouled after the inbound, and found herself back at the line, where she knocked down both attempts. The Bisons got two stops and buried more free throws after getting stops on the defensive end, resulting in a 58-52 win on the road and the Bison's sixth ASUN victory of the year.
HERD NOTES:
- The Bisons shot 38.9 percent from the floor and forced the Dolphins to shoot 26.2 percent on their home court.
- Lipscomb scored 16 points off turnovers and outscored Jacksonville down low 32-20.
- The Bisons bounced back after a three-point loss to Kennesaw State on Saturday, with out first team all-conference performer from a year ago, junior Bella Vinson.
- The win was the Bisons' 8th road win of the season, the most of any team in the ASUN this year.
- The win was the programs' third-ever on the road against Jacksonville, and the first under Coach Sumski.
