THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb and Queens went down to the wire, but Lipscomb Men's Basketball came away with a 90-88 victory for its second-consecutive ASUN victory thanks to last-second heroics from forward
Derrin Boyd.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started with hot offense as the squads nailed triples on both ends of the floor and the back-and-forth action continued. Through the first 10 minutes of the first half, the teams traded blows, shooting close to a 50-percent clip. At the under-12 media timeout, Queens held a slight 22-20 lead over the Bisons.
Queens stayed in front for several minutes, but
Derrin Boyd gave Lipscomb its first lead since the opening minutes with a triple from the wing for a 29-28 advantage. The battle continued into the under-eight media timeout as the Bisons held a slight 31-30 lead.
Out of the break, Queens went on a 6-0 run, forcing head coach
Lennie Acuff to call a timeout with 4:59 left in the half.
The Royals pulled ahead 41-36, but Boyd hit back-to-back triples, shaving the Queens lead 43-42 with 44.5 left on the first half clock, forcing a Queens timeout.
Queens made a triple in its next possession for a 46-41 advantage and Lipscomb was empty in its final trip down the floor of the half as it headed into the break at a 46-42 deficit.
Out of the break, the Bisons came out on fire as
Owen McCormack made a quick bucket and the Bisons got two quick steals that led to points to retake a 48-46 lead.
The back-and-forth action continued into the first media timeout of the half as the squads were tied at 55 each.
Lipscomb finally got a small bit of separation when
Joe Anderson collected a steal and found
AJ McGinnis who nailed a triple for a 73-67 advantage, Lipscomb's largest lead of the night with 9:05 left in the game. Queens called a timeout to try and stop the Lipscomb momentum, but out of the break, Lipscomb got another steal and
Cody Head converted a traditional three-point play for a 67-76 advantage.
Queens continued to fight and made buckets to keep in striking distance, but Lipscomb would punch back with a big bucket when it needed it and continued to hold an 83-77 lead at the final media timeout of the half.
The Bisons were held without a field goal for nearly four minutes, but Boyd broke the spell with three minutes to go with a tough layup at the rim as he split a pair of defenders, keeping Lipscomb in front by a handful of possessions.
On Queens' next trip down the floor, it nailed a triple, shaving the Lipscomb lead 87-84 with under two minutes left to play. Lipscomb was unable to convert on the offensive end, but forced a jump ball. The ball stayed with Queens as the Royals inbounded the ball with 55.2 ticks left on the clock.
After the inbound, Queens tried for a triple, but it was off the mark. A tie up on the rebound gave the ball back to Lipscomb, but the Bisons turned the ball over as it was taking the ball up the floor giving Queens the ball back with 43.5 seconds left.
Lipscomb got several stops down the stretch, but struggled to make free throws. However,
Grant Asman made a huge free throw with 14.8 on the clock to give Lipscomb an 88-86 lead.
Queens tied things at 88 with nine seconds remaining, but Lipscomb wasn't done as Boyd drove the basket and got a reverse layup to go with 0.9 on the clock to seal a 90-88 victory for the Bisons.
