Women’s Tennis Earns 5-2 Road Win Over FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lipscomb women's tennis hit the road on Monday to open up ASUN play with a matchup against the FGCU Eagles. The Bisons claimed a 5-2 win over the Eagles to collect their first ASUN win of the season and their win over FGCU on the road in program history.

"We had a great overall effort today," said head coach Jamie Aid. "The girls got off to a fast start in doubles, which really helps take a bit of pressure off in the rest of the match. It's hard to play on the road and it's always hard to play this early in the year in Florida where you don't have time to get used to the heat."

The Bisons claimed the early lead with a 6-1 win on court three from Anja Trbeznik and Deborah Dominguez Collado followed by a 6-2 win on court two from Sasha Dobranos and Rut Galindo to clinch the doubles point.

FGCU's squad then tied things up with the first singles win of the day. After a three-set battle, Anja Trbeznik fell to her opponent on court five and the Eagles grabbed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 win to open singles play.

The Purple and Gold answered the challenge decisively with Rut Galindo claiming a 6-4, 6-1 win on court three and Mariya Dolzhenko going 6-2, 6-4 on court four to not only regain the lead, but move into clinching position as the match hit a 3-1 score in Lipscomb's favor.

The Eagles struck back, however, and shortened the Bisons' lead to one point with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Alina Cherniaieva on court six.

Sophomore Sofiia Paladi then clinched the match for the Bisons with her 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win on court two to remain undefeated in singles play so far on the season.

Sasha Dobranos brought home the final point of the match for Lipscomb, going 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at the top spot to cement Lipscomb's first win over FGCU on the Eagles' home courts in program history and the squad's first ASUN win of the season.

"FGCU is a good team, and it is always a hard match no matter when or where we play them," Aid continued. "Today was the first time in program history that we have been able to beat them at their home courts."

"I'm really proud of the team today for starting out ASUN play so strong," Aid finished. "Sofiia [Paladi] remains undefeated on the year which is incredible! It's time to get ready for two really good matchups in North Florida and Stetson this weekend."
