LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lipscomb baseball fell to Louisville (11-5) for the first time Tuesday afternoon in the first of two meetings at Jim Patterson Stadium with the Cardinals this week.
The Bisons held a 7-5 lead entering the sixth, but seven unanswered runs lifted Louisville over Lipscomb 12-7 Tuesday afternoon.
The Louisville Cardinals scored the first run of Tuesday's matchup in the bottom of the first inning on a double to right center field.
Moments later, with a runner on second, the center fielder Alex Vergara made an outstanding diving grab to prevent more runs from scoring in the frame early for the Cardinals.
After getting out the inning defensively, Parks Bouck answered offensively for the Bisons with an RBI single to tie the game at a run a piece.
Lipscomb later took the lead as Alex Vergara continued his spectacular start in the third inning with a solo bomb to put the Bisons up 2-1.
However, back-to-back sacrifice flies in the bottom half gave the Cardinals a one-run lead at 3-2.
Like the last meeting between the two ball clubs a season ago, the Bisons erupted in the fourth inning for four runs to take a 6-3 lead.
Will Lee got the Bisons' scoring start with an RBI single to left field. Then, Jesus Pacheco singled up the middle, bringing home two more. Vergara added to his homer with an RBI single to left field, which rounded out a four-run fourth.
Louisville got back two runs in their following at-bats to make it a 6-5 score, but Lipscomb was able to plate a run for the fourth straight inning on a solo home run from Will Lee to cling to a 7-5 advantage.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals tacked on two more on a two-run home run to tie it in the bottom of the fifth, plating a run of their own for the third straight inning.
Louisville then took a three-run lead (10-7), scoring one run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and then two on their second two-run blast of the afternoon.
Runs in the seventh and eighth also came across for the Cardinals as they extended their lead to five.
After scoring a run in four of the first five frames, Lipscomb was held without one for the final four, resulting in a 12-7 loss Tuesday afternoon.
