Softball Drops Doubleheader to North Florida

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed their first ASUN opponent of the season to Draper Diamond on Saturday as the North Florida Ospreys made a stop in Music City. The Bisons stumbled in their sunny Saturday contests and dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Ospreys.

GAME 1: NORTH FLORIDA 11, LIPSCOMB 1
The doubleheader got off to a fast start in the first game of the day as the Ospreys logged five runs in the first half inning of the contest.

North Florida knocked two home runs out of the park in the top of the first for a combined five RBI to open the scoring.

Kaylyn Belfield got on-base with a single to the Ospreys' shortstop and made her way to second base on a passed ball before the Ospreys could halt the Bisons' offense and end the first frame with a 5-0 lead.

The Bisons' defense put up a huge effort in the top of the second inning, holding North Florida to just three batters in the inning before Brenna Sherman reached first base on a walk in the bottom of the frame.

Sherman made her way around to second base on a wild pitch and was joined on base by Elle Smith after she drew a walk as well, but the Ospreys cut off the Bisons' hope of shortening the difference in the second inning with a strikeout against Elise Shewmaker.

The Ospreys maintained their aggressive offense, putting a runner on second and third bases in short order and sending them both home with a huge single to right-center to extend their lead to seven.

After Macey Ogle took over for Ryleigh Sapp in the circle for the Bisons, the Osprey walked another batter and sent their base runner home on the throw from a single through the left side.

North Florida extended their lead to nine runs after a walk loaded the bases and another walk advanced the Ospreys' runners around the bases and sent one such runner across home plate before the Bisons could cut off the Ospreys' onslaught with a foul out from Josey Polk.

Macyn Kirby and Kaylyn Belfield both claimed spots on base in the bottom of the third frame for the Bisons, but three successive putouts put the Bisons' offense on hold.

The Ospreys put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a single to right field sending their runner on second base around to home plate and a wild pitch allowing their runner on third time to score.

Lipscomb's offense showed some life in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brenna Sherman took first base with a single up the middle before advancing to second after Alyssa Hastings was hit by a pitch.

The duo both advanced a base each on a ground out to third base from Elle Smith. A wild pitch from the Ospreys' pitcher allowed Hastings to advance to third while Sherman beat a quick throw to home plate to put the Bisons on the board.

After holding off North Florida's offense in the top of the fifth, the Bisons put a runner as far around as third base in the bottom of the frame, but North Florida's defense stalled the Bisons in their tracks and the Purple and Gold fell 11-1 in the first game of the series.

GAME 2: NORTH FLORIDA 6, LIPSCOMB 0
The Ospreys carried their momentum into the second game of the day, recording a double early in the first inning to score moments later on a single that streaked up the middle to take a 1-0 lead in the first frame.

Lipscomb's offense looked to cash in on their defensive momentum and put Kaylyn Belfield on base after she was hit by a pitch before Josey Polk took first base on a fielder's choice that got out Belfield at second base, but the Ospreys sent the Bisons packing with a third putout.

The two squads hit a brief stalemate in the second frame as the Bisons only allowed a single from the Osprey offense while the Purple and Gold were held to three batters in the bottom of the inning.

North Florida extended their lead in the top of the third with a single to right center that gave the Ospreys' runner on first time to round the bases and cross home plate.

The Bisons put up a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the third inning, but the Ospreys withstood the pressure from the Purple and Gold and sent the Bisons off with a fly out for Brenna Sherman.

Lipscomb's squad kept the heat on the Ospreys in the top of the fourth inning as the squad allowed just one single as they put up three putouts to hold North Florida's offense from extending their lead.

Lauren Griffith then found first base for the Bisons with a single through the right side before she was joined on base by Lauren Higginbotham with another single through the right side, but the Ospreys returned the favor and locked down on the Bisons to hold the score at 2-0 in UNF's favor.

The Ospreys then opened up their lead to 3-0 in the fifth with an RBI single before holding the Bisons to a three up, three down inning.

A scoreless sixth inning extended the game for the Bisons and the squad sought to close the gap, but North Florida's offense struck again in the top of the seventh inning with a RBI single and a two RBI double back-to-back to move to a 6-0 lead.

Briyana Wright got the Bisons on base in the bottom of the seventh with a single but a putout and two back-to-back strikeouts ended things there and the Ospreys claimed their second win of the day in a 6-0 shutout over the Bisons.
