Softball Weekend Swept by Ospreys With Sunday Shutout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball concluded their second ASUN series of the season on Sunday as they once more welcomed the North Florida Ospreys to Draper Diamond. The Bisons performed well defensively but the squad gave up three runs early in the matchup, falling 0-3 on the day and ending the weekend 0-3 against North Florida.

Lipscomb's squad stepped out onto Draper Diamond for their Sunday afternoon matchup ready to shake off Saturday's results as their defense delivered two quick putouts to put the Ospreys on their heels early in the top of the first inning.

North Florida's offense showed their teeth though as their third batter of the inning smacked a home run out of the left field wall to give the visitors a 1-0 lead before starting pitcher Laine Barefoot delivered a strikeout to end the inning and give the Bisons a chance in the box.

The battle remained tense as the Bisons took the plate and Macyn Kirby struck out swinging before two ground outs ended Lipscomb's turn in the batter's box.

The Purple and Gold's defense refused to be cowed in the top of the second as they held the Ospreys to just three batters to open the second frame.

Lipscomb's squad searched for their first hit of the game and all three of the Bisons' batters in the bottom of the second frame found a piece of North Florida's pitches but were put out by the Ospreys' defense before they could take first base.

The two squads continued to heat up through the third inning, putting runners on base but extending the defensive showdown as they held each other scoreless in the third frame.

North Florida's offense struck again in the top of the fourth inning as a double and a walk put two runners on base for the visitors before a fielder's choice and throwing error by the Bisons gave the Ospreys' front runner time to cross home plate.

After Kirby struck out to open the Bisons' turn at the plate, Kaylyn Belfield took first base for the Bisons in the bottom of the fourth as she drew a walk from the Osprey's pitcher and advanced to second base on a wild pitch but a pair of strikeouts ended Lipscomb's time in the box.

The Ospresys widened the gap once more in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle that sent their runner from second base around to home plate before the Bisons could shut down North Florida's offense.

Jack Busch put up a single for the Bisons in the bottom of the fifth inning but the squad were unable to capitalize on her spot on base and the score held at 3-0 moving into the sixth frame.

The Bisons' defense locked in on the Ospreys once more in the top of the sixth, holding off three separate runners on base to give the Bisons a chance at equalizing in the bottom of the inning.

After a pair of outs for the Bisons' firs two baters, Belfield once more drew a walk and advanced to third base on a single through the right side from Josey Polk, but a fly ball from Brenna Sherman was caught by the Ospreys' right field to end Lipscomb's turn at the bottom of the sixth.

Both squads fought hard in the seventh to put another run on the board, but the score held and the Ospreys took home a 3-0 victory to end the weekend.
