Softball Splits Doubleheader with Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lipscomb softball traveled to Fort Myers, Fla. for an early weekend series against the FGCU Eagles. The Eagles took the first game of the day in a 4-0 shutout, but the Bisons bounced back to claim the second game 3-2.

GAME 1: FGCU 4, LIPSCOMB 0
The Bisons stepped out onto the field in Fort Myers looking fresh and ready for action after a week-long break after their last game, a Sunday showdown with North Florida.

Lipscomb's squad put three runners on base and saw five batters in the batter's box throughout the top of the first inning, but FGCU's formidable defense showed their stripes early to hold off the Bisons' runners.

With Courtney Sauer starting in the circle for the Purple and Gold, the Bisons responded with aplomb in their own turn in the field, holding the Eagles to just four batters and delivering three putouts to send the home team away scoreless in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bisons continued to put up a strong offensive front, sending two runners into scoring position before the Eagles could halt their advance.

FGCU's offense got the jump on the Bisons in the bottom of the second frame, putting up three runs to crack open the scoring.

Lipscomb's batters continued to look for their chance to equalize and all three of their batters in the top of the third got a piece of their pitches but were put out by the Eagles' defense before FGCU extended their lead to four in the bottom of the third frame with a triple to bat in their runner on first.

The battle continued throughout the remainder of the matchup with the Bisons sending runners as far around as third base in the top of the fifth and holding the Eagles to a three up, three down inning in the bottom of the sixth, but the score held firm through the end of the game and the Bisons fell 4-0 in the first game of the day.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 3, FGCU 2
As the second game of the day began, the Eagles looked set to carry on their earlier success, holding the Bisons to a three up, three down inning to kick off the game before putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

Lipscomb's squad kicked into gear in the top of the second inning however, tying things up 1-1 midway through their turn in the box.

Elise Shewmaker knocked a double down the right field line and advanced to third base on a single from Kaylyn Belfield. A wild pitch game Shewmaker the time to cross home plate and advance Belfield to second base to tie things up before a pair of putouts briefly halted the Bisons' offensive momentum.

The spark Shewmaker's run sent up fueled the Bisons' defensive efforts, holding the Eagles to just seven batters over the next two innings and effectively stopping FGCU's offense in their tracks until the Purple and Gold could extend their lead.

Brenna Sherman took to the batter's box first for the Bisons in the top of the fourth inning, taking first base with a single to right center field before advancing to second when Shewmaker was hit by a pitch in her turn at bat.

Grace Cassarello stepped onto the base path to pinch run for Sherman and she and Shewmaker each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt from Kaylyn Belfield.

An error from the Eagles' shortstop on a knock from Jack Busch gave both Cassarello and Shewmaker time to cross home plate and pushed the Bisons up to a 3-1 lead before two more putouts ended Lipscomb's turn in the box.

Tensions rose as the two squads fought to add more runs to their scores but the two teams held each other to just three batters to end the fourth frame and open the fifth before the Eagles managed the feat in the bottom of the fifth inning.

An Eagle runner on third crossed home plate on a single to left field, cutting Lipscomb's lead to just one run before the Bisons locked in on a foul ball from FGCU's batter and sent the home team away.

The two teams battled through the final two innings, but the Bisons' defense stood tallest as they defended Lipscomb's lead through the final ball, claiming the second game of the day for the Purple and Gold and making Saturday's contest the deciding game for the series.
