Softball Bounces Back in Second Half of Doubleheader, Splits First Day of Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball began their second home tournament of the 2024 season on Friday with a doubleheader against the Iona Gaels. After five scoreless innings, the Bisons fell 2-1 to the Gaels in the first game of the day before recovering for a decisive 9-0 victory in the second faceoff of the day.

GAME 1: IONA 2, LIPSCOMB 1
The first game of the day brought the tumultuous state of the weather in Nashville down onto the field at the Draper Diamond as the two squads locked into a scoreless stalemate for the first five innings of the matchup.

The Bisons held the Gaels to a trio of three up, three down innings in the first five frames and were themselves stonewalled from scoring after twice putting runners as far around as third base.

Iona's squad finally broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth inning after putting a runner around to third base with a series of singles and fly balls before a single to right field sent a runner across home plate and put the Gaels on the board.

The Bisons were unable to put up a response in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Gaels scored again in the top of the seventh with another RBI single.

Lipscomb's squad found the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning as a sacrifice bunt from Elise Shewmaker and the ensuing play at first base gave Grace Cassarello time to round the bases from second base to home plate and hold off a shutout for Iona.

A strikeout and ground out ended the Bisons' turn in the batter's box and sealed the first game fo the day in Iona's favor.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 9, IONA 0
The second game of the day began with a new sense of urgency from the Purple and Gold as the clouds rolled back in over middle Tennessee to set the stage for the second showdown of the day between the Bisons and the Gaels.

Lipscomb's squad wasted no time in establishing their dominance in the second game of the day as Courtney Sauer stepped into the circle in the top of the first inning to relieve Macey Ogle and hold off two Gaels in scoring position with three consecutive strikeouts to end the top of the first inning.

In the Bisons' turn at bat in the bottom of the frame, the Purple and Gold put up four runs to claim a vast early lead.

After Alyssa Hastings claimed a spot on base with a single to right center field and Elise Shewmaker joined her minutes later as she drew a walk off the Gaels' pitcher, Brenna Sherman sent a single screaming out to the outfield and batted in both Hastings and Shewmaker to put the Bisons up 2-0.

Sherman was then send home herself in the squad's next at-bat on a single to the right of center field from Briyana Wright gave her time to finish circling the bases and add to their tally.

As a single from Lauren Griffith advanced Wright around to third base, an off pitch from the Gaels gave the two Lipscomb base runners the chance to try to advance and while Griffin was thrown out at second base, Wright managed to cross home plate before the play was complete and the Bisons ended the first frame with a 4-0 lead.

Both squads put runners on base in the second to no avail and it was the Bisons who once more found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.

Josey Polk was hit by a pitch to take first base as the Purple and Gold's first batter of the inning and she quickly advanced around to third base after a walk put Shewmaker on base once more and a pass ball by Iona's catcher advanced the duo once more.

Brenna Sherman sent a fly ball to right field that was collected, but not before Polk could put up a fifth run in the contest for the Bisons. Shewmaker soon scored her second run of the game on a fielding play from the Gaels that allowed her the time to cross home plate from third base and for Wright to steal second base after she drew a walk during her time in the box.

The matchup hit a brief stalemate once more in the fourth inning but the Bisons found their stride once more in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Tori Womack stepped into the Bisons' lineup and smacked a home run out of the right-center field wall to bring the momentum back into Lipscomb's control and to put the Purple and Gold up 7-0 in the game.

After holding off a response from the Gaels in the top of the sixth inning, the Bisons sealed their first win of the weekend with a two RBI double from Josey Polk that send Macyn Kirby and Alyssa Hastings around to home plate for a 9-0 lead and a run-rule victory for the Purple and Gold.
