Softball Splits Day Two of Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the UIC Flames to Draper Diamond on Saturday for the second day of the Music City Classic. The Flames claimed a late lead in the first game to win 2-1, but the Bisons struck early and took home a 6-2 win over UIC for an even split on the weekend.
 
GAME 1: UIC 5, LIPSCOMB 3
After an impressive resurgence on Friday against Iona, the Bisons stepped back into Draper Diamond ready to battle with the UIC Flames early Saturday afternoon.
 
Both the Bisons and the Flames put a run up in the first inning as UIC put a runner around to second base and sent her home with a double before the Bisons scored a run to tie things up in the bottom of the inning with a long single from Elise Shewmaker to centerfield to send Alyssa Hastings across home plate.
 
UIC took the lead once more in the top of the second inning with a pair of RBIs to earn a 3-1 difference. Lipscomb's squad soon equalized things in the bottom of the second inning as Elle Smith knocked a single past the Flames' shortstop to send Briyana Wright around home plate before an error by UIC's second baseman gave Jack Busch time to cross home plate and pull things even at 3-3.
 
The rapid-fire hitting continued in the third frame as the Flames put a fourth run on the board with a sacrifice fly ball to bat in another run.
 
The Bisons fought hard to respond to the challenge, but the two defenses stood tall through the next three innings and the score held firm until the seventh frame.
 
UIC's offense finally broke the stalemate as an error on the throw gave the Flames' baserunner time to advance from third and cross home plate.
 
Lipscomb's squad sent Hastings around to second base in the bottom of the seventh, but the Purple and Gold were unable to put up a run to cut the Flames' lead and the visitors from Chicago took home a win from the first game of the day.
 
GAME 2:
The second game of the day got off to an even quicker start than the first as the Flames found the board with a two RBI home run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
 
Lipscomb's squad responded aggressively in the bottom of the first inning, putting six runs on the board in quick succession to surge ahead of the Flames.
 
The Bisons quickly loaded the bases with Macyn Kirby, Alyssa Hastings, and Josey Polk and Elise Shewmaker knocked a single up the middle to send Kirby around to home plate and keep the bases loaded.
 
Briyana Wright then stepped up to the plate and sent Hastings home when she drew a walk from UIC's pitcher to tie the game up at 2-2 and keep the bases loaded for the Bisons.
 
Brena Sherman then launched Lipscomb's first triple of the season to left center field to send Polk, Shewmaker, and Wright home and put the Bisons up 5-2 in one swing of the bat.
 
After Lauren Griffith drew a walk from the Flames' pitcher and was then caught stealing at second base during Joie Giarrizzo's turn in the batter's box, Giarrizzo knocked a single to center field to send Sherman home and extend the Bisons' lead to 6-2.
 
From there on out, the two squads locked down defensively, holding each other to scoreless innings with three up, three down innings on both sides.
 
The Bisons' defense maintained the squad's early lead through the remaining innings with impeccable efforts from the squad's entire lineup.

The Bisons will host the #21 Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday, Mar. 14th in a midweek matchup beginning at 4:00pm CT.
