Softball Drops Queens Doubleheader in Back-to-Back Heartbreakers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the Queens Royals to Draper Diamond on Saturday for their latest ASUN matchup. After a pair of tight games, the Bisons gave up the go-ahead run to the Royals and the Purple and Gold fell in back-to-back heartbreakers on the sunny Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: QUEENS 3, LIPSCOMB 2
The two squads stepped out onto Draper Diamond ready for a beautiful Saturday of softball in Music City and seemed ready to go to battle with each other as the very first inning got off to a tumultuous start.

The Royals earned a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the first that the Bisons held off with the third out of the inning on a popped-up ball that was collected by shortstop Alyssa Hastings.

Lipscomb's squad then faced off with the deep Queens bullpen as the Bisons were relegated to a three up, three down inning to end the first frame.

The Purple and Gold then kicked it into gear, holding the Royals to four batters as the visitors' runner only advanced on a fielding error from the Bisons.

Lipscomb's squad went on to put two runners on base in the second, but Queens' defense locked down on Lipscomb and held the game scoreless.

The scoring finally broke open in the third frame as a fielding error gave the Royals time to send two runners across home plate.

Lipscomb's squad evened things up in the bottom of the third, however, and a triple to right center field from Katelyn Belding sent Briyana Wright and Kaylyn Belfield around the bases and across home plate to wipe out the deficit.

The two squads remained locked in battle, with each team putting at least one runner on base in each inning – highlighted by a huge bases-loaded opportunity for the Bisons in the bottom of the fifth that the Royals held off.

Queens' squad broke the stalemate in the top of the seventh as a wild throw gave the Royals time to send their runner on second all the way around to home plate for the visitors to take a 3-2 lead.

The Purple and Gold looked to put up a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, sending Belfield all the way around to third base and putting Belding on first after drawing a walk, but the Royals stood tall and claimed the first game of the series.

GAME 2: QUEENS 2, LIPSCOMB 1
The Bisons were ready to reclaim the advantage as the second game got under way with the squad dealing three quick putouts to hold the Royals in check.

In their first turn at the plate in the second game, Lipscomb's squad sent Hastings as far around the base path as second base, but the Royals returned the favor and shut down Hastings' appearance,

The Purple and Gold pushed hard to claim the early advantage in game two, holding off the Royals from a triple and walk, keeping the game scoreless until the bottom of the second inning.

The Bisons' tenacity paid off minutes later as Elle Smith singled up the middle and past the Royals' pitcher, advancing to second on a wild pitch to Lauren Griffith.

Smith advanced to third as Griffith was grounded out but a big time double from Brenna Sherman that flew to perfectly, if briefly, find itself lodged under the padding on the outfield wall to give Smith time to round the bases and open the scoring for game two in Lipscomb's favor.

Lipscomb's squad felt the momentum and held Queens' batters off for a quick-four batter inning before putting their own runners on base, only to be thwarted by the Royals' defense.

Queens found the scoreboard with a run of their own in the top of the fourth, tying things up at one run apiece on an error from Lipscomb's infield.

The Bisons fought hard to regain the lead, putting at least two batters on-base in every inning through to the bottom of the sixth where the Purple and Gold drew three consecutive walks to load the bases before Queens could shut them down.

The visitors from Charlotte were the ones to eventually find the scoreboard again as the Royals added to their tally with an RBI double before Lipscomb could shut them down.

The Bisons fought hard to tie things up in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bisons were unable to find home plate and the visitors from the Queen City took home a 2-1 win for the second game of the day,
