Softball Falls in Game Three of Series to Queens

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the Queens Royals to Draper Diamond once more on Sunday for the final game of their weekend series. The Bisons put runners on base in five of the game's seven innings but the Royals showed out and Lipscomb's squad fell 4-1 to the visitors from Charlotte.

The Bisons opened the game with a strong defensive first inning as the squad combined for three quick putouts to hold the Royals to a three up, three down inning to begin the game.

In Lipscomb's turn at the plate in the first frame, Josey Polk reached first base after Queens' left fielder dropped Polk's fly ball, but the Royals soon closed in for the third out of the inning and Polk was left stranded.

The two teams clashed once more in their tightly matched fashion in the second frame as the Royals were able to put two runners on base before a ground out and two strikeouts from starting pitcher Laine Barefoot sent the visitors on their way.

The Royals returned the favor in the bottom of the inning as Elise Shewmaker drew a walk to open the inning and Elle Smith reached first base on a fielder's choice that resulted in Shewmaker being put out before Queens once more stranded the Bisons' runner with the final out of the inning.

After Queens' squad sent a runner around to third base with a single, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice bunt, the Royals opened the scoring in Sunday's game with an RBI single to right field that gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Lipscomb's squad looked to even things up in the bottom of the inning, making solid contact with the Royals' pitches and seeing results in a single from Alyssa Hastings, but Queens' defense pulled down the Bisons' three other attempts and held on  to their 1-0 lead as the third inning came to a close.

The Royals broke the game open in the top of the fourth, putting two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning and sending one run home on a single down the left field line.

The Royals then extended their lead on a wild pitch, sending their runner on third across home plate and advancing their runner from second base on to third.

After the Royals drew a walk from relief pitcher Macey Ogle, the Bisons worked to catch the Royals' runner attempting to steal second base but were unsuccessful and Queen's runner on third base stole home during the play to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

Katelyn Belding was hit by a pitch with the very first pitch she faced to give the Bisons a runner on base as they looked to even the score, but the Royals delt a double play and put a ground out together for Smith to send the Bisons packing in three batters.

Queens looked to extend their lead in the top of the fifth, putting two runners on base with a single and a walk, but the Bisons held the visitors off to take another crack at closing the gap.

Two Lipscomb batters fouled out in the bottom of the fifth to get things going before Briyana Wright drew a walk from the Royals' pitcher.

After advancing to second base on a passed ball, Kaylyn Belfield knocked a single to center field to send Briyana Wright around to home plate and put a run on the board for the Bisons before Belfield was tagged out at second base as she attempted to advance on the play to home.

Relief pitcher S=Courtney Sauer recorded a four-pitch strikeout to open the top of the sixth frame and although the Royals recorded a single to put a runner on base, Lauren Higginbotham delivered on an unassisted double play at first base to record the Bisons' final two outs of the inning and send Lipscomb to the batter's box once more.

The Bisons continued their aggressive mindset in the box, taking swings and finding contact with the Royals' pitches, but Queen's defense was all over the field and put together three putouts to send the game into the seventh inning.

The two squads clashed defensively once more in the seventh frame as Lipscomb's squad delivered three putouts in four batters to send the Royals away without allowing them to extend their score, but the visitors returned the favor in the bottom of the inning as Higginbotham made her way to second base with a walk and an advance on Smith's ground out to Queens' Pitcher.

Lipscomb's squad was unable to capitalize on having a runner in scoring position and two balls popped up in the infield were collected by Queens' defense and the game ended 4-1 in the Royals favor, completing the sweep over the Bisons.
