Softball Struggles Against Chattanooga, Falls 10-2 in Midweek Matchup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the Chattanooga Mocs to Draper Diamond for a Wednesday midweek matchup. The visitors got off to a hot start the Bisons struggled to match and the Bisons ultimately fell 10-2 to the Mocs.

The Mocs showed up ready to play Wednesday evening, putting five runs on the board in the top of the first between a pair of plays on the field and a three RBI home run before starting pitcher Laine Barefoot could add a strikeout to end Chattanooga's first turn in the batter's box.

Lipscomb's squad fought to cut the difference in their first appearance at home plate as Kaylyn Belfield knocked a double as the Bisons' leadoff batter to give the Purple and Gold a runner in scoring position with their first batter of the game.

Belfield was joined on base by Alyssa Hastings a short while later as she drew a four-pitch walk from the Mocs' pitcher.

Josey Polk flied out, but the Bisons soon capitalized on having two runners on base as Katelyn Belding knocked a single up the middle.

Her hit snaked past the Mocs' second baseman and shortstop to give Belfield time to round the bases and slide home while Hastings made her way to second base, but a double play ended Lipscomb's first inning at the plate.

Chattanooga's offense jumped right back into action, loading the bases in their first four batters.

The Bisons brought in Macey Ogle to change the flow of the game, but the Mocs extended their lead with a walk to advance their runners around the bases and a sacrifice fly ball brought down by Elle Smith to go up 7-1.

The visitors looked set to increase their lead once again, but a heads-up play while attempting to run down the Mocs' runner on first base became an out at home plate as first baseman Lauren Higginbotham whipped the ball over to catcher Brenna Sherman to tag out Chatt's runner attempting to steal home base.

Lipscomb's squad stepped into the box once more and put two consecutive runners on base with Macyn Kirby knocking a single towards third base and catching the Mocs' defense unaware as no one moved to cover first base.

Lauren Griffith soon took first base for the Bisons as a fielder's choice caught Kirby out at second base, but a set of back-to-back putouts cut the Bisons' turn in the box short.

Chattanooga kept the pressure high on Lipscomb's defense as their leadoff batter in the top of the third inning knocked a home run over the left-center field wall and added two more runs with a triple late in the third frame to increase to a 10-1 lead.

The Purple and Gold continued to look for their break in the game as Belfield knocked a ball toward second base that was sent over to first for a ground out and Hastings got hold of a ball and sent it flying to right field, but it was brought down by the Mocs' right fielder for two outs.

Josey Polk made strong contact with a pitch towards right centerfield but a diving catch from Chatt's centerfielder sent the Bisons packing in the third out of the inning.

The Bisons' defense locked in to hold the Moc's to a scoreless top of the fourth inning before adding another run in the bottom of the fourth frame as the Bisons put two runners on base and advancing Belding around to home plate to bring the Bisons up to a 10-2 differential.

The two squads stalled out in the fifth frame as both defenses turned up the heat. The Mocs got a runner on base with a single to third base, but she was left stranded with a pair of ground outs from Lipscomb's squad.

The Bisons then put two runners on base with a pair of walks but they were left on base with a set of back-to-back fly outs from the Mocs to end the game after the bottom of the fifth.
