Softball Balks in Doubleheader Against UCA

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed their next ASUN foe of the season to Draper Diamond on the first day of their 2024 Alumni Weekend. The Bisons fell in both Saturday games to the Bears with a 1-3 loss in game one before falling 0-15 in the second game of the day.

GAME 1: CENTRAL ARKANSAS 3, LIPSCOMB 1
As Saturday's doubleheader began, the Bisons settled in to face off with the Central Arkansas Bears for the first time in the 2024 season, but the Bears showed up just as ready to get down to business.

After loading the bases with their first three batters of the inning, UCA attempted to send their runner on third across home plate, but she was caught stealing in a strong moment of connection between starting pitcher Courtney Sauer and catcher Brenna Sherman.

The Bears succeeded in capitalizing on their bases-loaded opportunity just a few minutes later as their fifth batter of the inning drew a walk to advance all runners around and put a run on the board.

A double play from the Bisons to put out the Bear's batter and tag out the Bears' runner from third base sent Lipscomb's squad to the plate where the Bisons attempted to even the score.

After the Purple and Gold put a runner on base with a single from Josey Polk, Central Arkansas' defense closed in on the Bisons and the game came to a gritty stalemate.

Both squads put runners on base and held each other to three up, three down innings as the game wore on, but it was the Bisons who finally broke onto the board next as a trio of singles in the bottom of the sixth gave Lipscomb a bases-loaded opportunity of their own and a deep fly ball to left field from Katelyn Belding gave Kaylyn Belfield enough time to sprint down the third base path and cross home plate to tie things up.

The Bears put up the final two outs of the inning to hold off another bases-loaded opportunity and the game moved into the seventh frame but two strong defensive showings from both the Bisons and the Bears pushed the game into extra innings.

Central Arkansas' first batter of the inning singled to Hastings at shortstop and was soon joined on base by another Bears runner on a fielding error from Lipscomb's infield.

After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners around to third and second base respectively, the Bears broke the stalemate on an error from Elle Smith in the Bisons' centerfield, sending both runners across home plate to extend their lead to a 3-1 mark as the game moved into the bottom of the eighth.

Josey Polk stepped up to the plate first for the Bisons in the bottom of the frame and reached first base on an error from UCA's infield, but a trio of consecutive putouts against the Bisons' next three batters sealed the Bisons' fate and ended the game 3-1 in UCA's favor.

GAME 2: CENTRAL ARKANSAS 15, LIPSCOMB 0
The second game of the day began in much the same fashion as the first as the Bisons put two outs up against the Bears early in the first inning but a deep single and some aggressive baserunning saw Central Arkansas put up a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

The Bisons remained aggressive at the plate, getting pieces of the Bears' pitches but each of Lipscomb's first three batters of the game were grounded out by the Bears' infield and the matchup moved on to the second frame.

The two squads once more locked down defensively, holding each other to three up, three down innings in the second frame with a few looks between the third and fourth innings, but ultimately the defensive efforts from both teams held the 1-0 score right where it was through the end of the fourth inning.

Central Arkansas' offense broke that hold in the top of the fifth inning, however, and logged 14 runs in the 52-minute long top of the first inning.

What started with a two RBI single soon spiraled into a grand slam, a pair of RBI singles, a sacrifice fly RBI, a RBI double and a two RBI double, and a two RBI home run to blow the score wide open for a 15-0 lead for Central Arkansas moving into the bottom of the frame.

Lipscomb's squad moved to take on the daunting task of chipping away at the Bears' lead as Macyn Kirby knocked a single past Central Arkansas' second baseman and Elle Smith drew a walk to give the Bisons two runners on base, but a pop out in the infield ended Lipscomb's turn at the plate as well as ending the game then and there.
