Softball Celebrates Senior Day, Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Jacksonville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball celebrated senior day on Saturday during their final ASUN regular season doubleheader at Draper Diamond this season. The Bisons welcomed the Jacksonville Dolphins to Music City and split the day's results with the visitors from the Sunshine State.

GAME 1: LIPSCOMB 6, JACKSONVILLE 5
The Bisons started their Senior Day off strong, only allowing one Jacksonville batter to reach a base and sending the visitors packing in a scoreless inning without any pop and circumstance.

Jacksonville responded with a strong first defensive inning of their own and the Bisons' three batters each got a piece of a pitch, but their knocks were pulled down and the Dolphins stepped back up to the plate.

The Dolphins put runners on base in the top of the second and held a dangerous position with a runner on first and third, but Lipscomb's infield combined to tag out their runner on first base in a chase down and bring the Bisons back into the batter's box.

Lipscomb's squad began to find their stride in the bottom of the second as Katelyn Belding led off the inning with a single to left field.

Graduate student Elise Shewmaker knocked a massive double into the left center field wall to send Belding over to third base and give the Bisons two runners in scoring position.

A sacrifice fly from Lauren Higginbotham then gave Belding time to cross home plate, advance Shewmaker to third base, and give the Purple and Gold a 1-0 lead before the Dolphins could close out the inning.

The Dolphins put two runners on base in the top of the third, but the Bsons' defense locked the inning down quickly and turned the game to the bottom of the third.

Centerfielder Elle Smith drew a five-pitch walk to give the Bisons a runner on base with their first batter of the inning, she then advanced to second base on a ground out against Kaylyn Belfield.

Alyssa Hastings soon joined Smith on base with a five-pitch walk of her own, but Hastings was thrown out at second base on a fielder's choice from Jacksonville's pitcher that advanced Smith to third base and allowed Josey Polk to take first base.

An attempt from Jacksonville's catcher to catch Josey Polk stealing gave Smith time to flex her tremendous speed and steal home, which in turn gave Polk time to steal second base as the Dolphins tried to catch Smith at home.

The Bisons' 2-0 lead held through the end of the third frame as the Dolphins added a ground out against Katelyn Belding.

Jacksonville's squad cut Lipscomb's lead to one in the top of the fourth as an error at first base allowed a Jacksonville runner across home plate.

Lipscomb's squad extended their lead once more in the bottom of the fourth as a sacrifice fly ball to center field from Smith sent Elise Shewmaker across home plate for a 3-1 lead before a home run in the top of the fifth for the Dolphins cut that lead back to one run.

A three-run inning for the Dolphins in the top of the sixth saw the momentum shift towards Jacksonville and the score stood still until the bottom of the seventh.

A trio of back-to-back singles from Alyssa Hastings, Josey Polk, and Katelyn Belding loaded the bases for Lipscomb.

A sacrifice fly from Elise Shewmaker sent Hastings across home plate to bring the difference down to one run before a massive single to left center field from Lauren Higginbotham sent both Polk and Belding home to clinch a walk-off single win for the Bisons in the first game of the day.

GAME 2: JACKSONVILLE 1, LIPSCOMB 0
After the Senior Day celebrations concluded, the two squads clashed once more on Draper Diamond for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

After the back-and-forth scoring of the first contest, the two teams engaged in a battle of wills in the second game of the day with only one run scored between the two teams in seven innings and only two hits allowed in seven innings from sophomore pitcher Macey Ogle.

The Bisons put runners on second and third in the bottom of the first frame with singles from Kaylyn Belfield and Macyn Kirby, but a pair of back-to-back strikeouts sent the Purple and Gold packing.

Both Lipscomb and Jacksonville put up a defensive show, holding off runners and putting out batters to hold the score at 0-0 until the top of the fourth where calculated baserunning from the Dolphins saw an RBI single take the visitors into the lead.

Lipscomb's squad fought hard to answer the challenge, seeing runners as far as second base twice throughout the remainder of the game, but the defensive showcase continued from both teams and the Dolphins took home a 1-0 win in the second game of the day.
