Softball Falls in Final Game of Series with Dolphins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the Jacksonville Dolphins back to Draper Diamond Sunday afternoon for the tiebreaking final game of the series between the two squads. The Bisons took an early lead but fell behind and dropped the third game of the series to Jacksonville.

The Bisons' defense started off strong, holding off two runners on base after a single and a walk from starting pitcher Macey Ogle to fend off the Dolphins early in the matchup.

Jacksonville's squad then returned the scoreless inning with a blank inning for Lipscomb's offense, despite a drawn four-ball walk from Josey Polk.

After holding off two bases-loaded opportunities for the Dolphins in the top of the second, the Bisons found an early lead in the bottom of the frame as Elise Shewmaker knocked a double to left field and advanced to third on a ground out against Lauren Higginbotham before crossing home plate during a ground out against Elle Smith for a 1-0 Lipscomb lead.

The Dolphins answered the challenge in the top of the third, sending two runs across home plate with a big double to the right-center field wall to take a 2-1 lead.

The Purple and Gold saw Joie Giarrizzo knock a single into centerfield and advance on a throwing error after a knock from Kaylyn Belfield to give the Bisons two runners on base.

Alyssa Hastings knocked a huge single to left center field to send Giarrizzo home and bring the game tied at 2-2 before a single from Josey Polk gave the Bisons a bases loaded opportunity.

The Bisons nearly retook the lead with a strong swing from Katelyn Belding, but a double play by the Dolphins held Lipscomb off and a line out against Elise Shewmaker sent the game into the fourth frame.

Jacksonville's offense responded vehemently with a four-run inning in the top of the fourth, knocking a pair of single RBIs and a two-run home run off of relief pitcher Laine Barefoot to move up into a 6-2 lead.

The Bisons drew two walks in the bottom of the fourth before the Dolphins could put any outs on the board as two pop outs briefly slowed Lipscomb's momentum, another walk from Belfield gave the Purple and Gold a bases loaded opportunity.

Hastings took advantage of the setup moments later with a single to right field to advance Lipscomb's runners around, sending Lauren Higginbotham across home plate and bringing the score to 6-3 in Jacksonville's favor before a fly ball to center field was pulled down by Jacksonville's outfield to end the inning.

The Dolphins extended their lead once more in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly RBI to move the fame to a 9-3 mark before the Bisons cut the Dolphins' lead to four runs with a pair of back-to-back RBIs.

Presley Rader stepped into the circle in relief for the Bisons in the top of the sixth and helped the Bisons hold Jacksonville to a four-batter inning, dealing a strike with her first collegiate pitch.

The Bisons put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth as Belfield drew a walk and Josey Polk knocked a double down the left field line to advance Belfield over to third and give the squad two runners in scoring position with two outs before Jacksonville pulled down a fly ball in right field to move the game into the seventh inning.

The Dolphins added two runs to their tally with a long single to right center that sent two runs across home plate.

The Bisons put two runners on base with a walk for Shewmaker and a single from Smith, but a fly out from Jacksonville ended the game and sealed the series in the Dolphins' favor.
