Softball Stumbles in Doubleheader Against Colonels

RICHMOND, Ky.  – Lipscomb softball embarked on their final road trip of the regular season on Thursday, heading up to Richmond, Kentucky to face off with the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The Bisons fought voraciously, but the Colonels emerged victorious with a 7-2 count in the first game before collecting a 4-1 win in the second game of the day.

GAME 1: EASTERN KENTUCKY 7, LIPSCOMB 2
The Bisons opened the game with an eventful turn at the plate as Kaylyn Belfield drew a leadoff walk and Josey Polk reached first base on a fielder's choice to give Lipscomb's squad two runners on base in the first frame.

Lipscomb's defense stepped up to the challenge, holding the Colonels to a three-batter inning with three putouts.

The Purple and Gold once more put two runners on base in the top of the second frame with a single from Brenna Sherman while Macyn Kirby reached first base on a fielder's choice that the squad could not complete on, holding EKU's offense to a three up, three down inning once more with a trio of putouts.

The Colonels' defense fought to hold the Bisons off in the top of the fourth, but Alyssa Hastings knocked a single to center field to once more give the Bisons a runner on base.

Lipscomb's defense remained undeterred in their efforts, holding off a Colonel runner to hold the score at 0-0 moving into the fourth frame.

After a three-batter inning for the Bisons to open the fourth frame, the Colonels broke open the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bat in one of the Eastern Kentucky runners on base.

The two squads stalled out through the fifth inning, but the Bisons kicked it into another gear in the top of the sixth as a single from Josey Polk and a home run from Katelyn Belding brought the Purple and Gold to a 2-1 lead in the contest.

A busy bottom of the sixth saw Eastern Kentucky surge to take the lead back with a six-run inning to move into a 7-2 lead over the Bisons as the game moved into the seventh inning where a three up, three down inning for the Bisons ended the first of the day's contests.

GAME 2: EASTERN KENTUCKY 4, LIPSCOMB 1
The Bisons looked to turn things around in the second game of the day, but the Colonels carried their momentum into the day's second showdown.

After Alyssa Hastings drew a walk to stand as the Bisons' lone runner on base in the top of the first, the Colonels jumped out to a two-run lead with a two RBI home run in the bottom of the frame.

Eastern Kentucky's defense locked down on the Bisons, holding Lipscomb's squad to a three up, three down inning before putting two runners on base that the Purple and Gold sent packing.

Elle Smith knocked a single to the Colonels' third base in the top of the third, but it was the Colonels who found the scoreboard once more in the bottom of the frame with a pair of back-to-back singles to extend their lead to a 4-0 mark moving into the fourth frame,

Walks for both teams in the fourth inning failed to find their way around to home plate, but the Bisons broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth inning as Briyana Wright singled to third base to give Lipscomb a runner on base.

Wright was joined on base by Elle Smith with a single of her own through the left side and when Wright was put out at third base on a knock from Kaylyn Belfield, Smith advanced to second.

Alyssa Hastings then knocked a huge single up the middle to give Smith time to flex her impressive speed and cross home plate to bring the score to 4-1 as Lipscomb's squad fended off Eastern Kentucky runners who made it as far around as third base in the fifth to advance the game to the sixth inning.

A three up, three down inning on both sides in the sixth sent the game to the top of the seventh where the Bisons looked to add to their run tally, but the unwavering Eastern Kentucky Defense held the Bisons back and the second game of the day went to the Colonels to seal their series win over the Bisons.
