Softball Clinches First ASUN Series of the Season with Dominating Doubleheader Wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lipscomb softball took a trip up to Louisville, Ky. on Saturday for their next ASUN matchup of the season. The Bisons faced off with Bellarmine and delivered a pair of dominating wins over the Knights with a 4-0 tally in the first game of the day before going 6-1 in the second half of the doubleheader.

GAME 1: LIPSCOMB 4, BELLARMINE 0
The Bisons showcased their aggressive offense that has been a highlight for the squad this season early in the first game in Louisville.

After a scoreless first inning for both squads, the Purple and Gold drew first blood in the weekend series with a run from Lauren Griffith.

After Griffith reached first base after a fielding error from the Knights' infield, she made her way around to third base on a pair of ground outs from Katelyn Belding and Kaylyn Belfield before taking advantage of a fielding error that allowed Alyssa Hastings to take first base to cross home plate and put the Bisons in the lead.

The score then went to a standstill for six innings as the Knights' fought to answer the challenge and the Bisons worked to both hold the Knights off and extend their lead.

There followed a battle of wills between the two teams' pitchers as both squads were held to three up, three down innings with strikeouts across the board before the stalemate eventually broke in the seventh frame.

In the top of the seventh, Belfield knocked a single through the left side before advancing to second when Alyssa Hastings drew a walk from Bellarmine's pitcher.

The duo advanced a base each when Briyana Wright dropped a sacrifice bunt right in front of Bellarmine's catcher to give the Bisons two runners in scoring position.

Lauren Higginbotham stepped into the box as a pinch hitter for the Bisons and smacked a single straight back at the Knights' pitcher – knocking a hit so hard that it took the glove right off the pitcher's hand, allowing Higginbotham to take first base and sending Belfield across home plate.

Higginbotham then stole second base during Presley Rader's at bat to give the Bisons two runners in scoring position once more before Macey Ogle took advantage of the opportunity with a massive double that clipped the top of the outfield fence to stay inside the park and send Hastings and Higginbotham across home plate, giving the Bisons a 4-0 lead in the contest.

Josey Polk them drew a four-pitch walk to put two runners on-base for the Bisons, but a fly ball brought down by the Knights' right fielder ended Lipscomb's turn at the plate.

The Bisons' defense stood tall for Lipscomb in the bottom of the seventh frame and delivered a one, two, three inning for the Purple and Gold to seal their first win of the weekend.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 6, BELLARMINE 1
Lipscomb's squad carried their momentum from the last game with them right into the second game of the day and immediately set to work on repeating their previous success.

As the leadoff batter for the Purple and Gold, Kaylyn Belfield drew a walk from Bellarmine's pitcher before advancing to second on a single from Alyssa Hastings.

The duo advanced a moment later on a wild pitch, scoring shortly after on a big single up the middle from Josey Polk to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead before Bellarmine's defense locked in for the inning and put up three put outs to end Lipscomb's time in the box.

The Knights fought hard to hold off another shutout, putting a runner around to third base and sending them home on a ground out to Courtney Sauer to cut Lipscomb's lead to just one run.

After a scoreless second frame for both teams, the Bisons found home plate once more in the top of the third inning as Elle Smith drew a five-pitch walk before hustling around the base path on a huge double from Elise Shewmaker that flew down the left field line and bounced off the wall to add another run to Lipscomb's tally.

An inspired Lipscomb defense handily held the Knights back with just seven batters in the next two innings before the Bisons broke the game wide open in the top of the fifth inning.

Katelyn Belding knocked a double to right center field and was joined on base by Elle Smith with a four-pitch walk to give Lipscomb two runners on base.

Elise Shewmaker knocked another double to left center field to send Belding across home plate and putting Elle Smith on third base to add a run to Lipscomb's tally and give the Bisons two runners in scoring position.

Jack Busch took advantage of the setup moments later as she sent Smith across home plate with a single to left field, giving the Bisons runners in the corners as she advanced Shewmaker's pinch runner Lauren Higginbotham over to third base.

Busch then stole second base during Macyn Kirby's at-bat, putting the Bisons in position to score two more runs.

Higginbotham attempted to take advantage of the setup before a knock from Kirby set her sprinting towards home, only to be tagged at the plate and called out while Busch advanced to third and Kirby took place for runners in the corner once more.

Kirby then stole second base and a four-pitch walk for Kaylyn Belfield gave the Bisons a bases-loaded opportunity with two outs on the board.

Alyssa Hastings then stepped into the batter's box and knocked a single down the left field line to advance all three runners once base each – scoring Jack Busch to extend Lipscomb to a 6-1 lead – before the Knight's could halt the Purple and Gold's momentum with a strikeout against Josey Polk.

Lipscomb's defense continued to show out against the Knights, holding them to a three-batter inning in the bottom of the fifth and allowing just one walk in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Bisons looked to add yet another run to their tally late in the top of the seventh as Belfield reached first base on a fielding error from Bellarmine's infield and Hastings reached on a single up the middle.

The duo advanced along their was as Josey Polk knocked a single down the left side, but Belfield was tagged out at home by the Knight's catcher to end the inning.

Lipscomb's defense remained calm and collected during the bottom of the seventh as Macey Ogle delt out a pair of back-to-back strikeouts and Briyana Wright snagged a pop-up ball from Bellarmine's third batter of the inning to cement their 6-1 win, clinching the series victory for the Bisons and marking their first ASUN series win of the season.
