Women's Basketball Holds on Late to Defeat Dolphins

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University women's basketball team were able to hold off a second half charge by Jacksonville University, defeating the Dolphins, 85-82, Thursday inside Allen Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb saw a 9-8 lead at the media timeout balloon to 23-10 with 1:02 left in the opening quarter with a 14-2 run, including back-to-back triples by Jalyn Holcomb.

Despite a late jump shot by Comari Mitchell, the Bisons had the advantage after one quarter, 25-12. 

The home team swelled the lead to 24 on a second chance layup by Molly Heard, as they maintained a 45-31 halftime lead.

Jacksonville cut the deficit down to 10 at the end of the third quarter and to six, 68-63, with under six minutes remaining. 

The teams went back-and-forth, but the Dolphins made it a two-point game at the free throw line by Priscilla Williams with 1:28 left. 

After a Lipscomb offensive foul, Jacksonville took its first lead of the game, 82-81, with a Williams 3-pointer. However, the Dolphins converted the triple early in the shot clock, as the Bisons had 25 seconds left to win the game.

On the ensuing possession, Bella Vinson was able to draw a shooting foul with 12 seconds remaining. The senior was able to knock down both shots from the charity stripe to reclaim the lead, 83-82. 

With one last gasp for the Dolphins, Edyn Battle turnved the ball over thanks to a steal by Vinson plus two more free throws sealed the deal for the home team. 

KEY STATISTICS
Jalyn Holcomb missed her career best by one point on Thursday night, as she exploded for 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting with a career-high six triples. 

Bella Vinson added 19 points on 6-of-12 from the floor with six rebounds, including 11 in the fourth quarter. 

Claira McGowan chipped in 12 points with two assists, while Ainhoa Cea dished out six dimes. 

Molly Heard grabbed a game-high eight boards and passed out five assists. 

HERD NOTES
Lipscomb improves to 13-9 against Jacksonville in Allen Arena, and they have been in victorious in five of the last six meetings overall. 

With a career-high six shots from beyond the arc for Jalyn Holcomb, she became the third player in Lipscomb's Division I era to convert 200 triples in a career.

With a quick turnaround, Lipscomb will head out on the road next to take on Queens on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in Charlotte, North Carolina.
